Health and healing in a world full of disease and death, before modern medicine, was an urgent matter.  The symbol of the god Asklepius you will be familiar with\u2013 it is the snake curled around the staff which we still see today on the AMA logo, among other places.  Notice for example how Galen, one of the early famous doctors, who came from Pergamon is represented here.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9055\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is part of the restored via sacra leading to the places of healing, the theater, and other parts of the complex known as the Asklepion.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask1-e1403437500595-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9056\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is a nice schematic explaining the building complex.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask4.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask4-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9057\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There has been a good deal of restoration work here, so that one can begin to get a visual image of how impressive this complex once was.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask5.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask5-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9058\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask6.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask6-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9059\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask7.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask7-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9060\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And of course where would they be without imperial patrons, in this case Trajan, who must be honored for coming and building things here.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask8a1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask8a1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9062\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is a helpful sign (with imperfect English) about the healing methods here\u2014 incubation (i.e. sleep overs), hot mineral baths, use of the sacred springs in the sacred groves, underground passages and water rituals etc.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/ask2-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9063\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is much we do not know about all these secret rituals and procedures.
