Indeed, there were several different Artemises, one more a fertility goddess, another rather like Diana the goddess of the hunt, and so on. Here is a sign to get us oriented in regard to the one in Sardis.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9108\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the shot as one approaches the site\u2026<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9109\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9110\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The setting of this temple is gorgeous, in a valley surrounded by mountains,<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb3.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb3-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9111\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a beautiful catalpa tree,<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb4.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb4-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9112\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A word here about the stone masons is in order.  The Greek word tekton and it\u2019s variants refers to an artisan who works in stone and wood (note to NT scholars, see Mk. 6 and parallels, where Joseph and Jesus end up being called tektons).<br>\nHere is a mason\u2019s inscription at the bottom of a column with the Greek word just mentioned\u2026\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/20140524_122143.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/20140524_122143-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9113\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb-11.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/sarb-11-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9114\"><\/a><br>\nIt would have been stone masons who erected the honorific stele as well, and carved it.
