It was a huge city with two major theaters (one for morning one for afternoon performances depending on where the sun was) and a stadium, and it has become a huge dig, the most active ambitious dig perhaps in all of Turkey. Just reconstructing the streets in itself is an enormous task<br>\nHere for example is Syria Street heading west of course,<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod2-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9148\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod1-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9149\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A lot of heavy traffic went down these streets as the ruts above prove.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence of the water problem is not hard to find.  There are calcified pipes, and the ancient equivalent of water filters,,,,<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod5.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod5-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9152\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod6.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod6-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9153\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are some shots of the \u2018morning theater\u2019 i.e. the one that didn\u2019t have the sun in the patrons\u2019 eyes in the morning.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod4.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod4-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9154\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod7.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod7-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9155\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The street plan here seems to be the classic Hypodamus plan of streets intersecting at right angles and main streets going basically in the direction of the four points of the compass.  Here are several of the streets thus far unearthed in the recent excavations\u2026<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod8.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod8-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9156\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod9.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod9-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9157\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod10.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/laod10-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9158\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This dig is an inspirational story as it is largely the heart project of a local archaeologist from Denizli, who\u2019s city agreed to support his efforts to real excavate this site which had lain dormant for so long. The results have been spectacular.
