This week, the United Nations is deliberating in New York how to implement the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that it will launch formally in September.<\/p>\n

These decision will impact how the world helps those in need.<\/p>\n

In the past sometimes our efforts to help have been poorly managed. Food aid can wind up destabilizing a local economy, or can cause create a culture of dependence rather than fostering entrepreneurial opportunities.<\/p>\n

\n

I encourage you to pay attention to how these decisions are being made, and I hope you will join me in keeping this process in prayer. Addressing global hunger and poverty is not about producing more food\u2026 (we have more than enough) but assuring the right food and resources are\u00a0being produced in the right places and making sure they are\u00a0accessible to the right people.<\/p>\n

Here are the goals being discussed:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Goal 1 \u2013 End poverty in all its forms everywhere
\nGoal 2 \u2013 End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
\nGoal 3 \u00a0\u2013 Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
\nGoal 4 \u2013 Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
\nGoal 5 \u2013 Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
\nGoal 6 \u2013 Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
\nGoal 7 \u2013 Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
\nGoal 8 \u2013 Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
\nGoal 9 \u2013 Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
\nGoal 10 \u2013 Reduce inequality within and among countries
\nGoal 11 \u2013 Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
\nGoal 12 \u2013 Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
\nGoal 13 \u2013 Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts*
\nGoal 14 \u2013 Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
\nGoal 15 \u2013 Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
\nGoal 16 -Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
