This week, I\u2019ve been reflecting deeply on the <\/span>first petition<\/span><\/i> of the Lord\u2019s Prayer: \u201cHallowed be thy name.\u201d At first glance, it seems like a strange request. After all, God\u2019s name is already <\/span>eternally and infinitely holy<\/span><\/i>. Why would we need to ask for it to be hallowed?<\/span><\/p>\n

Saint Cyprian addressed this in one of his treatises. He wrote that we do not pray for God\u2019s name to <\/span>become<\/span><\/i> holy\u2014as though our prayers could confer holiness upon the Holy One. Instead, we ask that God\u2019s name would be <\/span>hallowed within us<\/span><\/i>. Cyprian reminds us that God is <\/span>the very source of sanctity<\/span><\/i>, lacking nothing in holiness.<\/span><\/p>\n

So the question arises: <\/span>How do we hallow God\u2019s name?<\/span><\/i> And why would Jesus teach us to pray this way?<\/span><\/p>\n

Peter\u2019s exhortation in 1 Peter 1:16 points us to the answer: <\/span>\u201cBe holy, for I am holy.\u201d<\/span><\/i> Echoing Leviticus, this command reveals God\u2019s desire for His people to be sanctified. But still we ask: <\/span>How does our holiness contribute to the hallowing of God\u2019s name?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Throughout Scripture, God\u2019s name is not a title He hoards\u2014it is an <\/span>identity He shares<\/span><\/i> with His people.<\/span><\/p>\n
