This week the Western Church remembers Augustine of Hippo. If you are a part of the Orthodox church you may remember his feast a couple months ago on June 15th.<\/p>\n

Augustine is THE teacher of the West. He was hugely influential on both Catholic theology and the theology of Luther and Calvin. Much of his theological influence came out of his fights against others which led to some strong positions on the nature of Original Sin, and predestination.<\/p>\n

Augustine was a convert to Christianity later in life. His journey to faith began after hearing the rhetoric of Ambrose, and reading\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0Life\u00a0of\u00a0Antony\u201d<\/a>\"\"<\/p>\n

One day he heard children singing \u201ctake up and read\u201d he opened the scriptures to romans and was convicted of the truth of the Gospel. He was baptized in 387.<\/p>\n

Here is what you need to know about\u00a0Augustine:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. His works \u201cConfessions<\/a>\"\"\u201d and \u201cCity of God<\/a>\"\"\u201d are \u2018must read\u2019 Christian classics<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  2. He fought against Pelagianism<\/a>\"\" \u2013 Which taught works-righteousness<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  3. He is a \u201cDoctor of the Church<\/a>\"\"\u201d for Catholics<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  4. He has influenced nearly every theologian in the west Catholic AND Protestant<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  5. He opposed the religion of Manichaeanism<\/a>\"\", which he was once an adherent of.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  6. He argued against the Donatists<\/a>\"\"\"\" who were elitist schismatics at his time.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    Augustine is credited with the prayer, \u201cEverlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being: You have made us for Yourself, and hearts are restless until they rest in You.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
