If this title for Mary seems funny to you don\u2019t worry. The early church had problems with it too. Just look at what went down at the First Council of Ephesus<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Many of us protestants get nervous when we here the title. We think this is used to put Mary on too high a pedestal. Interestingly the term emerged less as a way of exalting Mary but as a way to assert the Divinity of Christ.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Greek for \u201cMother of God\u201d is \u0398\u03b5\u03bf\u03c4\u03cc\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2 (<\/span>Theotokos<\/span>)

<\/span>While, Mother of God<\/i>, describes a family relationship but not necessarily physical childbearing. Theotokos explicitly refers to physical childbearing. This word can literally be translated <\/span>the one who gives birth to God. <\/i>,

<\/i> It\u2019s a statement about who Jesus was. The term is used in contrast to the views of Nestorianism<\/a> which emphasized the dual natures of Christ<\/a>. They argued Mary should be called Christotokos <\/i>which means \u201cbirth-giver of Christ.\u201d Cyril of Alexandria<\/a>, along with the Council denounced Nestorius\u2019 teaching as erroneous and decreed that Jesus was one person, not two separate people and therefore Mary gave birth to God himself.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
