{"id":1302,"date":"2013-01-27T09:20:30","date_gmt":"2013-01-27T14:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/biteintheapple\/?p=1302"},"modified":"2013-01-27T09:20:30","modified_gmt":"2013-01-27T14:20:30","slug":"a-confusion-of-lights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/biteintheapple\/a-confusion-of-lights\/","title":{"rendered":"A Confusion of Lights"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/01\/Epiphany-4-2013-e1359258681396.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1303\" title=\"Epiphany 4 2013\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/01\/Epiphany-4-2013-e1359258681396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"304\"><\/a>Light is our perennial winter theme.\u00a0 Epiphany, the season of lights and signs, reveals something of what it means to be human.\u00a0 But there are differences in lights, in their uses and in their revelations.\u00a0 Some lights invite us, starlight, Christmas lights, sunshine on spring days, these bring hope into blossom and\u00a0melt what is frozen.\u00a0 And there are other lights, lasers that destroy and the harsh, merciless lights of interrogation, surgical lights that lay bare what is diseased.<\/p>\n<p>The story of Jesus preaching in his hometown synagogue,\u00a0amazing everyone at first, then making them so angry they try to kill him, has all of these lights in it, strobing a message that is both well known and incomprehensible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/01\/Epiphany-4-Light-upon-cathedral-color-e1359258844698.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1306\" title=\"Epiphany 4 Light upon cathedral-color\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/01\/Epiphany-4-Light-upon-cathedral-color-e1359258844698.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"314\" height=\"420\"><\/a>When they adore him he warns them he hasn\u2019t come home to do magic, that they may have heard he has accomplished some miracles, but miracles are few and far between.<\/p>\n<p>Their rage rises.\u00a0 And why not?\u00a0 Is it not your constant prayer, as it is mine, \u00a0that what threatens me and those I love may be removed, that what aches and is empty in me and in those whom I love may be filled?\u00a0 Everyday \u00a0I want to be saved from my fears and to relieve the lives of those I love of anxiety, sickness, despair.\u00a0 I want what is broken to be mended.\u00a0 I want the arc of history to bend toward peace and justice.\u00a0 I want miracles.<\/p>\n<p>And why pray to a God who will not do these things?\u00a0 And why would I welcome a Messiah who does not bring these things?\u00a0 What kind of love is this, that does not bend to need?\u00a0 But what kind of God consents to serve my will?\u00a0 And what Messiah \u00a0takes orders like a waiter?\u00a0 And who am I, to be certain that what I will is godly and good?\u00a0 And who would I be, were I to doubt the rightness of these human longings to be free?<\/p>\n<p>And so it was in Nazareth that day, when the combined lights of his home congregation shifted from mellow to harsh.\u00a0 Only what each light allowed to be seen, could be seen.\u00a0 And who was standing in whose light?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/01\/Replace-102-Unidentified_Artist_-_Frederick_Douglass-at-29.-Wikipedia-Frederick-Dopuglass-page.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-7319\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/01\/Replace-102-Unidentified_Artist_-_Frederick_Douglass-at-29.-Wikipedia-Frederick-Dopuglass-page.png\" alt=\"Replace 102 Unidentified_Artist_-_Frederick_Douglass at 29.  Wikipedia Frederick Dopuglass page\" width=\"251\" height=\"320\"><\/a>A friend who is a doctor wrote today of the schizophrenia of yesterday, when she received kind and grateful words from one patient who is moving away and regrets leaving her care, right after another patient had cursed her at some length for the care she was giving.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Luther King was praised and cursed.\u00a0 He and the Civil Rights Movement bent the arc of history, and still divide opinions.<\/p>\n<p>The recent PBS documentaries, \u00a0<strong><em>The Abolitionists<\/em><\/strong>, tell of people who sacrificed years, personal happiness, and home, to bend the arc of history, which was on course to spread slavery throughout this nation, so that all Americans could be set free from its curse.\u00a0 In folk memory they have each been remembered for their quirks more than their work: the crazed John Brown, the overly pious Grimkes, the sentimental Harriet Beecher Stowe, the pedantic William Lloyd Garrison, the\u00a0stentorian Frederick Douglass, the gritty Harriet Tubman.<\/p>\n<p>The series tells us that it was by working together over a long time without evidence of the very thing they were, in fact, accomplishing, that they changed the course of this nation.\u00a0 To their perseverance, in the midst of howling mobs and thundering detractors in the press, we are forever indebted.<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/01\/Replace-103-Angelina_Emily_Grimke-Wikipedia-Grimke-Sisters.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7321\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.production.patheos.com\/blogs\/biteintheapple\/files\/2013\/01\/Replace-103-Angelina_Emily_Grimke-Wikipedia-Grimke-Sisters.jpg\" alt=\"Replace 103 Angelina_Emily_Grimke Wikipedia Grimke Sisters\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/01\/Replace-103-Sarah_Moore_Grimke-Wikipedia-Grimke-Sisters.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7320\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/01\/Replace-103-Sarah_Moore_Grimke-Wikipedia-Grimke-Sisters.jpg\" alt=\"Replace 103 Sarah_Moore_Grimke   Wikipedia  Grimke Sisters\" width=\"205\" height=\"299\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That Jesus bent the arc of history is undeniable.\u00a0 And yet\u00a0the bending arc, and the\u00a0truth shining clear in the abolitionists, does not diminish<\/p>\n<p>the anguish we feel about God,\u00a0unanswered prayers, our lives, what it is we worship, and why.<\/p>\n<p>The last light in this story is a\u00a0miracle we often overlook:\u00a0 he passes through the howling mob, intent on hurling him from the cliff;\u00a0 he escapes into the midst of them.<\/p>\n<p>From the<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/01\/Epiphany-4-Sisson-e1359259174910.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-1314\" title=\"Epiphany 4 Sisson\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/01\/Epiphany-4-Sisson-e1359259174910.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"457\"><\/a> days of Abraham till our own time, the presence of God has\u00a0 meant God with us in all hours and days, not God\u00a0altering time to please us.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Working with us is not the same as working for us.\u00a0 Jesus invites us to works of salvation\u00a0with God, in time.\u00a0 Bending the arc of time is a work that is possible, but never easy nor quick.<\/p>\n<p>And that means that prayers, like justice sought, remain with us unanswered even when they are being answered; and that\u00a0it is only in the long view of remembered times that the bending of the arc becomes visible.<\/p>\n<p>____________________<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Illustrations:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>1.
