That was why<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em> We were always able to say: \u201cWe are children of God,<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em> And our Father has never forsaken His people.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"> \u2014 W. Auden, <em>Narrator<\/em> in the Advent section of <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em><strong>For The Time Being:<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>A Christmas Oratorio<\/strong><\/em><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2012\/12\/john-the-baptist-coptic-icon.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1008\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2012\/12\/john-the-baptist-coptic-icon.jpg\" alt=\"john-the-baptist-coptic icon\" width=\"275\" height=\"300\"><\/a>John has forsaken every familiar thing in this world, the comforts of town and culture, the clothing, even the food, shunning all of it to become a lone, wild thing.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>Suppers of lamb and tsimmis, with rugelach and almond cakes and sweet wine to wash it down, are behind him now.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>He has become a vegan living off the land, drinking river water.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>His single purpose is to cry out from the wilderness, <em><strong>Fools!<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span><strong>Nothing familiar can save you from the approaching Spirit of God.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nothing you know, nothing you remember, neither your feasts nor your fasts nor your ancestors can avail you now.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">He roars special contempt upon the pious, who have translated faith into habits and observances, the very opposite of wonder, mystery and awe. <span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0<\/span>They are the good church folk of his time, of our own time, of every time.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>They preserve customs \u2013 the church fairs they learned from their grandmothers, the old familiar carols, the festivals carefully packed away from year to year.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>They bring them out, dust them off, hang them up, light the candles, yawn a bit as the service progresses, and are away\u00a0home at the end, satisfied that they and God have come close enough. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/12\/Advent-2-Grotto-of-the-Nativity-Christopher-Chan-2007-Bethlehem-Palestinian-Territories-e1385869938355.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3048\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/12\/Advent-2-Grotto-of-the-Nativity-Christopher-Chan-2007-Bethlehem-Palestinian-Territories-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"Advent 2 Grotto of the Nativity Christopher Chan 2007 Bethlehem Palestinian Territories\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\"><\/a>John knows this and only this:<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>it is a hollow sham.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>The wild tiger spirit of God approaches, as the prophet Haggai said, <em><strong>to<\/strong> <strong>shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Perhaps the most important of John\u2019s howling words for us to hear is:\u00a0<strong><em>God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The self-importance of being people of covenants and Advent candles, who know the right readings for the right occasions, \u00a0who hold the world together for and through Abraham, falls away before these new creations, the stone children, fresh from the hand of God with a new word of life breathed into them. Their faith is not inherited from us. It is grace given.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2012\/12\/John-Baptist4.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1009\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2012\/12\/John-Baptist4.jpg\" alt=\"John Baptist\" width=\"294\" height=\"171\"><\/a>As well, John urges us away from the temptation of dwelling on Mary\u2019s womb as the moment\u00a0and the place, or on Jesus\u2019 gender as the defining aspect, or on anything that can be a stumbling block to our own hour in the presence of the Holy Spirit. \u00a0The Spirit pours from Mary as it has from John, in her sung devotion to the One who <strong><em>pulls the mighty from their thrones, exalts those of low degree, scatters the proud in the imaginations of their hearts, fills the hungry with good things, sends the rich empty away<\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">This is the unquenchable fire.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is the grandeur of God.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>And this is the wrath to come.\u00a0John sees this, sees even as he baptizes the motley thousands. Josephus, the Roman historian,\u00a0wrote of crowds as large as fifty thousand going out to the wilderness to hear John, but John sees that none of\u00a0 it is\u00a0important, not the water, not the words, not the people\u00a0kneeling in the river. \u00a0In the end what it comes to is the unquenchable fire of the Holy Spirit, who will close every age we open, who will fill the world with children not because we are virtuous, but because even stones are fruitful when God touches them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/12\/Advent-2-Tura-Cosme-1474.-National-Gallery-of-Art-DC-e1385870489796.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3052\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/12\/Advent-2-Tura-Cosme-1474.-National-Gallery-of-Art-DC-114x300.jpg\" alt=\"Advent 2  Tura, Cosme, 1474.  National Gallery of Art DC\" width=\"114\" height=\"300\"><\/a>Mary will take that fire into herself, not because she is a pure virgin but because she sees with a prophetic eye, because she is willing to burn as John, and all the prophets before him, have burned.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>And when\u00a0Jesus meets John at the river, standing waist deep with John pouring water over him, the fire burning in Jesus will flame out, and they will all see \u2013 unquenchable fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Often, in our churches, we name these Advent weeks sweetly, as Hope, Joy, Love, Peace.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>The texts name them otherwise:\u00a0 Bleak Earth.\u00a0 Unquenchable<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Fire.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>Spirit in Darkness.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>Birth.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is the\u00a0kind of time Auden describes:<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span><em><strong>The Inevitable is what will seem to happen to you purely by chance;<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span><strong>The Real is what will strike you as really absurd.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Yet neither John, nor Mary, nor Auden, are speaking about a time of winnowing\u00a0the world\u00a0by egos,\u00a0or by totting up sins and virtues, or by sorting abstinence from indulgence.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span>The winnowing will be of time itself, a sorting of the wheat of life from the political, religious, and folkloric foolishness of the ages.<span style=\"font-family: Book Antiqua\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Here, then, comes John,\u00a0crying out:\u00a0<em><strong>I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me . . . . He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The unquenchable fire, which is of God and is God, is not hellfire. It is the fire of redemption through re-creation. \u00a0John struggles to tell us that God has not finished making the world. God is at work in it, is near, will shape us, and soon. \u00a0We see the making of new earth in the deltas of rivers and the bogs of lakes, in the new isles which volcanos throw up into the sea. \u00a0We are all in the fire of change.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/12\/Replace-75-Crow-by-Christopher-L.-Wood.-Cornell-Labs-website.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7221\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/599\/2013\/12\/Replace-75-Crow-by-Christopher-L.-Wood.-Cornell-Labs-website.jpg\" alt=\"Replace 75  Crow by Christopher L.
