With this post, I am beginning a new series called \u201cMy San Francisco<\/a>\u201d where I will periodically share pictures from events and districts around San Francisco. \u00a0There is a little more info here<\/a>, but suffice it to say that I am not trying to provide a comprehensive look into any gathering or\u00a0neighborhood, but rather to provide a small glimpse\u00a0into the complex San\u00a0Francisco\u00a0landscape.<\/p>\n

This week, I decided on spending about an hour walking around the Excelsior District of San Francisco. I know this area pretty well since I used to work here<\/a>. I have spent many hours eating, walking and generally hanging out\u00a0in this gem of\u00a0neighborhood. That said, I do know that the Excelsior district is much more than the Mission Street corridor, but I decided to just walk up and down Mission to find some good pics. Below are my top choices with a little commentary, but please take a moment to look at the FULL ALBUM<\/a> to get a better sense of my walk.<\/p>\n

You may also want to check out a few of my local favorites: Mama Art Cafe<\/a>, Filipino Community Center<\/a>, Zaab Thai<\/a>, Goldilocks<\/a>, The Chick-n-Coop<\/a>, Mexico Tipico<\/a>, The\u00a0Excelsior\u00a0Action Group<\/a>, Jerry Day<\/a> and the church where I used to serve as the pastor, Mission Bay Community Church<\/a> organizes\u00a0a\u00a0great Food Pantry<\/a> every Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cEXCELSIOR\u201d <\/strong>I love that each of the streets are pressed into the concrete. Not just in the excelsior, but it looks cool. \u00a0One of the neat things about the\u00a0Excelsior\u00a0is that the streets are names after major global cities.
\n<\/p>\n

\u201cPRODUCE\u201d <\/strong>Dotting the neighborhood are these\u00a0great\u00a0local markets with fresh produce, meats and other groceries.<\/p>\n

\u201cMURALS\u201d <\/strong>There are wonderful murals through the neighborhood. \u00a0This is one of my favorites: the \u201cLast Supper\u201d with Jesus really breaking bread with the\u00a0disciples.
\n<\/p>\n

<\/a>\u201cLOCKS\u201d <\/strong>Like many urban areas there are still some empty lots, most entryways are gated and one still needs to be aware of one\u2019s surroundings. City life for sure.
\n<\/p>\n

\u201cLANGUAGES\u201d <\/strong>The Excelsior is one of the most diverse\u00a0communities\u00a0in San\u00a0Francisco\u00a0illustrated by this shot of three stores right next to one another: Tagalog, Chinese and Spanish!
\n<\/p>\n

\u201cRESOURCEFUL\u201d<\/strong>Not sure what about this caught my eye, but the makeshift\u00a0barricade\u00a0of old doors to cover a new remodel seemed very urban McGyver-esque.
\n<\/p>\n

\u201cJERRY\u201d <\/strong>One of the big claims to fame of the\u00a0Excelsior\u00a0District is that Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead spent his childhood here. \u00a0This is him as depicted on, yes, a mural. If you want more info be sure to check out Jerry Day<\/a> held every Summer.
\n<\/p>\n
