Some are for work, others for edification and still others, what I call \u201cbrain candy,\u201d for the pure joy of reading. \u00a0Here are three books that are are being lugged around in my bag and\/or on my kindle these days. If you liked the non-fiction gem,\u00a0<em><a id=\"static_txt_preview\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0375725601\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0375725601&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brureychoblo-20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America<\/a><\/em>\u00a0then I\u00a0guarantee\u00a0that you will devour Erik Larson\u2019s latest book,\u00a0<em><a id=\"static_txt_preview\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0307408841\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0307408841&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brureychoblo-20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler\u2019s Berlin<\/a><\/em>. Holy schmoly, only is it a page-turner with the added bonus that you feel yourself getting all smarter and stuff as you read it. \u00a0Next up is one that was recommended to me by a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usfca.edu\/facultydetails.aspx?id=4294973378\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">friend and professor<\/a> at the University of San Francisco,\u00a0<em><a id=\"static_txt_preview\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0312425791\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0312425791&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brureychoblo-20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Can\u2019t Stop Won\u2019t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation<\/a><\/em>\u00a0by Jeff Chang, again, get smarter. And if you really want to dive into the hip-hop scene, grab the pricey\u00a0<em><a id=\"static_txt_preview\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0415873266\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0415873266&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brureychoblo-20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">That\u2019s the Joint!: The Hip-Hop Studies Reader<\/a><\/em>\u00a0or give a listen to <a href=\"http:\/\/bluescholars.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Blue Scholars\u2019<\/a>\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0051RRBGI\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0051RRBGI&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brureychoblo-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cinemetropolis<\/a><\/em>, one of my favorites. And finally, I have been trying to finish my review of T.C. Ryan\u2019s\u00a0<em><a id=\"static_txt_preview\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830837930\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0830837930&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=brureychoblo-20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ashamed No More: A Pastor\u2019s Journey Through Sex Addiction<\/a><\/em>, so I\u2019ll say more about it later, but it\u2019s one of those topics that is simply never talked about; a good one to read.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>The 47% \/\/<\/strong> Okay, I admit it, while I will resist the name-calling and demonizing that is just too easy, after watching the video of Mitt Romney and his comments during a private\u00a0fundraiser, I for one, do not think that he was pandering or misspeaking. One can argue about whether or not Romney should have said what he said, but I have no doubt that he echoes what many people\u00a0believe . . . and he has helped to make\u00a0my choice of Obama or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jillstein.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Stein<\/a>\u00a0even clearer. \u00a0I\u00a0posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/breyeschow\/2012\/09\/18\/thoughts-on-bitter-gun-owners-and-the-entitled-47\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">some thoughts on the whole thing<\/a>, but here is a great post from Rhetoric, Race and Religion [<a href=\"http:\/\/rhetoricraceandreligion.blogspot.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">blog<\/a> | <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Rhetoricracerel\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">twitter<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Rhetoric-Race-and-Religion\/194196523989264\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">facebook<\/a>] and contributor, Rashad Grove, as he muses about a <em><a href=\"http:\/\/rhetoricraceandreligion.blogspot.com\/2012\/09\/theology-of-privilege_19.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Theology of\u00a0Privilege<\/a><\/em>. Good stuff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<strong>GANGNAM STYLE \/\/<\/strong> This week, I REALLY felt out of the pop-culture loop . . . more than usual. Not only was I\u00a0unfamiliar\u00a0with most of the songs from this week\u2019s episode of Glee, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalspy.com\/tv\/s57\/glee\/recaps\/a407342\/glee-recap-brittany-has-breakdown-rachel-sexes-up-in-britney-20.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Britney 2.0<\/a>, but \u201cGangnam Style\u201d references were popping up everywhere. Apparently there is this thing called Youtube where people can share movies and this one is a biggie. Thank goodness for Grace Ji-Sun Kim, for <a href=\"http:\/\/gracejisunkim.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/17\/gangnam-style\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">dropping a little knowledge<\/a> for those of us who are <em>out<\/em> of the know.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>THE\u00a0DEMOCRACY\u00a0OF INCLUSION \/\/<\/strong>\u00a0If you are looking for a cool project to support with a few bucks, I just got a note from multimedia journalist and friend,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelfagans.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Michael\u00a0Fagans<\/a>, about a very cool project that he is working with the Kern Arts Council. From Michael, \u201cOne of the reasons that this project resonates with me is that it is a film about and by people with special needs. Rather than document a group of people in our community, the group is turning the camera back on society and talking about and illustrating their experiences with life. All too often people think of special needs children, but no one seems to realize that they grow up to be adults.\u201d This seems like a worthy project, so please\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/IncludeMeTheDemocracyOfInclusion\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">like their Facebook Page<\/a> and, if you feel so called, please join me and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/650535943\/include-me-a-film-about-and-by-people-with-special\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">donate on Kickstarter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>ONE-LEGGED SOCCER PLAYER \/\/<\/strong> And lastly, from the \u201cIf this does not move you, you might just be dead inside\u201d file, here is <a href=\"http:\/\/deadspin.com\/5945136\/one+legged-soccer-player-scores-incredible-goal-off-corner-kick?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=pulsenews\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a 12 second video<\/a> that made me tear up just a bit.
