Julie McConnel already had four children when she found out she was pregnant \u2013 at age 45 \u2014 again. \u00a0She knew\u00a0her age might cause her to have multiples or a child with Down syndrome. \u00a0She was shocked when both happened.<\/p>\n

I like it that she is honest with her initial struggle with this diagnosis, and even considered putting them up for adoption. \u00a0She feared she and her husband wouldn\u2019t be able to handle both children with special needs. \u00a0Then, they were born!<\/span><\/p>\n

Now she\u2019s telling everyone about her experience to hopefully change people\u2019s minds about Down syndrome<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She said: \u2018You can have expectations of how life is going to be, but it might not pan out the way you imagined.<\/p>\n

\u2018Now that I have Charlie and Milo, I understand that and I have more compassion than I ever had before.<\/p>\n

\u2018They\u2019re not the result of a bad lifestyle choice I made, or a reflection of race or economics or where you live in the world and I hope that by sharing our story I can open people\u2019s eyes a bit.<\/p>\n

\u2018Everywhere we go, people love the boys because they\u2019re special, but I know this won\u2019t always be the case when they\u2019re older and it hurts to think about.<\/p>\n

\u2018I want people to see that there are people out there who are different, but it doesn\u2019t make them any less valuable.<\/p>\n

\u2018They\u2019re just the way they\u2019re supposed to be.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
