{"id":2154,"date":"2014-04-04T11:00:17","date_gmt":"2014-04-04T17:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/carynriswold\/?p=2154"},"modified":"2014-04-04T13:49:01","modified_gmt":"2014-04-04T19:49:01","slug":"beyonce-studies-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/carynriswold\/2014\/04\/beyonce-studies-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyonce Studies 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Jessica Valenti <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/blog\/177605\/jessica-valenti-beyonce-absolutely-feminist\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">called<\/a> Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s recent self-titled release \u201cthe album that is going to launch a thousand women\u2019s studies papers.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how many papers have been written so far, but I do know that the timing couldn\u2019t have been better for my teaching theory in gender and women\u2019s studies this spring.\u00a0 There\u2019s even an essay question about it on our exam today.<\/p>\n<p>We began by talking about the marketing and the message:\u00a0 Seizing control of the means of production (Marxist feminism) and embedding unmistakable feminist messages like the sample of Chimamanda Adichie\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">TED talk<\/a> on feminism.\u00a0 And simply telling girls that they are, indeed, flawless when they wake up:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/embed\/video\/x18dx0p\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>We returned from time to time to the fact that Beyonc\u00e9 embraces and performs her sexuality.\u00a0 Is this a good thing (radical libertarian feminism) or a problematic thing that supports patriarchal objectification of women (radical cultural feminism)?\u00a0 We watched her performance of <em>Drunk in Love<\/em> with Jay Z at the Grammys.\u00a0 How does it compare to Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke at the 2013 Video Music Awards?\u00a0 What role does race play?\u00a0 Does it matter that we know they\u2019re married?<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fG-Qser6ISc\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fG-Qser6ISc<\/a>\n<p>We even went back into the Beyonc\u00e9 vault with the 2011 video for <em>Girls (Run the World)<\/em>, discussing whether or not the troupe of women dancing before the lineup of militarized men subverts the established order and the male gaze, or whether it\u2019s inversion of self and other provides a visual example of existentialist feminism in practice.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beyonc\u00e9 - Run the World (Girls) (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VBmMU_iwe6U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>Among other things, postmodern feminism talks about Michel Foucault\u2019s concept of the Panopticon and the ways that patriarchy subjects women to surveillance in terms of everything they do.\u00a0 So we turned to <em>Pretty Hurts<\/em>, the first track on the newest album.\u00a0 Set in the pageant world (\u201cpageant the pain away\u201d) and depicting the distorting effects of plastic surgery, disordered eating, and the overwhelming pressure to be pretty, the audience is urged to consider:\u00a0 if \u201cperfection is the disease of a nation,\u201d what\u2019s the cure?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/251\/2014\/04\/beyonce.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2163\" style=\"margin: 4px 8px;\" title=\"beyonce\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/251\/2014\/04\/beyonce-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In both <em>Flawless<\/em> and <em>Pretty Hurts<\/em>, Beyonc\u00e9 embeds video of herself as a younger girl in various competitions and contests.\u00a0 The image of six black girls (<em>Girls TYME!<\/em>) losing <em>Star Search<\/em> in 1993 to a group of white men highlights the way race has been a continual factor in her work in this industry.\u00a0 One student read and reported on Sheri\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunkfeministcollective.com\/2014\/03\/14\/angels-and-ghosts\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">article<\/a> at the <em>Crunk Feminist Collective<\/em> on the video for <em>No Angel<\/em>, and its representations of poverty and working people in Houston, Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s hometown.\u00a0 It\u2019s connections to black feminism (Patricia Hill Collins) and discussions of intersectionality (Kimberle Crensaw) make complex structural analysis visible.<\/p>\n<p>If you know your Beyonc\u00e9, consider all that we didn\u2019t even get to:\u00a0 <em>Survivor<\/em>, <em>Bootylicious<\/em>, <em>Single Ladies<\/em>, <em>If I Were A Boy, <\/em>the 2013 SuperBowl Halftime Show \u2026 .\u00a0 Then you\u2019ll know why I considered retitling my feminist theory course <em>Beyonc\u00e9 Studies<\/em>, and considered it a great moment when a student asked in class discussion halfway through the semester:\u00a0 What Would Beyonc\u00e9 Do?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jessica Valenti called Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s recent self-titled release \u201cthe album that is going to launch a thousand women\u2019s studies papers.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how many papers have been written so far, but I do know that the timing couldn\u2019t have been better for my teaching theory in gender and women\u2019s studies this spring.\u00a0 There\u2019s even an [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1142,"featured_media":2161,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[441,4,6],"tags":[297,530,770,1006,768,769,120,14],"class_list":["post-2154","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-education","category-feminism","category-race","tag-beyonce","tag-crunk-feminist-collective","tag-existentialist-feminism","tag-feminism","tag-jessica-valenti","tag-marxist-feminism","tag-race-2","tag-radical-feminism"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
