St. Alphonsus challenges skeptics who categorically deny the possibility of miracles in the generations since the Scriptures were written.<\/em><\/p>\n

Many stories have been told of miracles accomplished through Mary\u2019s intervention. But we must note that some people make it a boast that they are free of such notions. They pride themselves on believing that no other miracles have ever taken place than those recorded in the Sacred Scriptures, looking upon all others as tales and old fables.<\/p>\n

In this matter it\u2019s well to repeat a reasonable observation made by the devout scholar Fr. John Crasset. He notes: \u201cJust as good people easily believe miracles, so are the wicked always ready to ridicule them.\u201d<\/p>\n

He goes on to say: \u201cIt is a weakness to give credit to everything we hear. But on the other hand, the rejection of the possibility of miracles, when they are attested by serious and devout people, suggests one of two attitudes: either lack of faith, because such things are thought to be impossible to God; or presump- tion, because the credibility of such reliable witnesses is denied.\u201d<\/p>\n

We normally give credit to a pagan historian from ancient times such as Tacitus or Suetonius. So how can we escape the charge of presumption if we refuse to give credit to writers who are Christian, learned, and proven reliable?<\/p>\n

St. Peter Canisius says: \u201cIf respectable authors have reported an event with reasonable evidence, and it has not been rejected by learned men, and it is also an account that spiritually edifies our neighbor, then there is less danger in believing and accepting it as true than in rejecting it with a disdainful and presumptuous spirit.\u201d\u00a0\u2014St. Alphonsus Liguori, The Glories of Mary<\/p>\n

\nDo I tend toward skepticism about reported miracles in Christian settings?
\nOn the other hand, have I ever witnessed what I would consider to be a miracle, or known someone personally who did?<\/p>\n

\nYou, Blessed Lady, are yourself a miracle, conceived without sin, and your Son is a miracle, conceived by a virgin. Is there anything impossible for God?<\/p>\n
