St. Alphonsus imagines Our Lady\u2019s last farewell to the men who would<\/em> become the foundation of the Church.<\/em><\/p>\n

The holy Apostles, seeing that Mary was already at the point of leaving this world, renewed their tears. They all threw themselves on their knees around her bed. Some kissed her holy feet, some sought a special blessing from her, some entrusted to her a particular need, and all wept bitterly. Their hearts were pierced with grief at being obliged to separate themselves for the rest of their lives from their beloved lady. As the most loving mother, she had compassion on them all, and consoled each one. To some, she promised her patronage. Others she blessed with particular affection, and still others she encouraged to the work of the conversion of the world.<\/p>\n

In particular, she called St. Peter to her. Since he was head of the Church and vicar of her Son, she urged him especially to spread the Faith. She also promised him at the same time her special protection in heaven. In an even more special way, however, she called to herself St. John, who more than any other was grieved at this moment when he had to part with his holy mother. Remembering the affection and attention with which this holy disciple had served her during all the years she had remained on earth since the death of her Son, this most gracious Lady said:<\/p>\n

\u201cMy own John\u201d (speaking with the greatest tenderness)\u2014\u201cmy own John, I thank you for all the assistance you\u2019ve given me. My son, be assured of it: I won\u2019t be ungrateful. Although I\u2019m now leaving you, I go to pray for you. Remain in peace in this life until we meet again in heaven, where I\u2019ll wait for you. Never forget me. In all your needs call me to your aid; for I will never forget you, my beloved son. Son, I bless you. I leave you my blessing. Remain in peace. \u00a0<\/em>IN GOD\u2019S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why does St. Alphonsus imagine Our Lady addressing a special farewell to the Apostles, and to St. Peter and St. John in particular? Why would they have needed such words of encouragement about the future as she was leaving?<\/p>\n

From a prayer of Blessed Pope Paul VI: O Mary, look upon us who are your chil<\/em>dren, look upon us who are brothers and sisters, disciples and apostles, a continuation of Jesus.<\/em> Make us aware of our vocation and our mission.<\/em><\/p>\n
