The<\/em> Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God dates to the seventh century and<\/em> comes from the Eastern liturgical tradition. Many consider it to be the queen<\/em> of all hymns to Our Lady. Here is a short portion that overflows in rich<\/em> imagery calling for careful reflection.<\/em><\/p>\n

In honoring your maternity, Mother of God, we exalt you as the living temple.<\/p>\n

For the Almighty Lord<\/p>\n

who holds all things in his hands,<\/p>\n

the One who has dwelt within your womb, sanctified and glorified you<\/p>\n

and taught all people to sing to you:<\/p>\n

Hail, O tabernacle of God, the Word; Hail, O holiest of all the saints.<\/p>\n

Hail, O Ark gilded by the Spirit; Hail, O limitless treasury of life.<\/p>\n

Hail, O precious crown of reverent kings; Hail, O true honor of zealous priests.<\/p>\n

Hail, O unshakable tower of the Church; Hail, O unbreachable wall of the kingdom.<\/p>\n

Hail, O you through whom the flags of victory are raised; Hail, O you through whom the enemy is routed.<\/p>\n

Hail, O healing of my body; Hail, O salvation of my soul.<\/p>\n

Hail, O Virgin and Bride ever pure!<\/p>\n
