<\/a>Angels confess their ignorance<\/strong><\/p>\nAngels see the majesty of \u00a0God, says \u00a0St. Gregory the Great, but they <\/em>ca<\/em>nnot\u00a0<\/em>understand it. Like Job, we should be ready to admit that we ca<\/em>n<\/em>\u2019<\/em>t<\/em> debate on <\/em>equal terms with <\/em>God<\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cGod, whose wrath no man can resist, and under whom they stoop that\u00a0bear up the world\u201d ( Job 9:13).<\/p>\n When it says \u201cunder whom they stoop that bear up the world,\u201d we may also understand the angelic powers. They \u201cbear up the world\u201d in that they perform the duties of governing the universe\u2014as Paul tells us when he says, \u201cAre they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?\u201d (Heb. 1:14).<\/p>\n So when he says \u201cGod, whose wrath no man can resist, and under whom they stoop that bear up the world,\u201d it\u2019s as if he were seeing the humiliation of every created being, and said in fear and trembling, \u201cWho among weak mortals resists your nod, before whose might even the angelic powers stoop?\u201d<\/p>\n Or certainly, since we see nothing of things above us when we stoop, those subtlest spirits must have stood straight if they completely reached the power of God\u2019s majesty. But although, when they are lifted up, they do see the loftiness of the divine nature, yet not even the angelic powers manage to comprehend it; therefore \u201cthey stoop that bear up the world.\u201d<\/p>\n And since the righteous man, from his weakness, cannot understand the divine nature, he remembers who he is with careful humility, and makes himself small in his own eyes compared with the omnipotence of the Supreme Majesty, saying, \u201cHow then can I answer him, choosing my words with him?\u201d ( Job 9:14).\u00a0\u2013St. Gregory the Great, \u00a0Moralia in Job<\/em>, 9.26<\/p>\n IN GOD\u2019S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n When things seem to go badly for me, am I tempted to second-guess God? Does it help to remember that even the righteous Job\u2014even the angels themselves\u2014could never really understand the divine nature?<\/p>\n CLOSING PRAYER<\/strong><\/p>\n Guardian Angel, teach me to remember my ignorance, and ask forgiveness for the sins <\/em>I do not know.<\/em><\/p>\n _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
