\"angels_augustine_1\"<\/a>Even when the evil angels turn their strength against us, says \u00a0St. Augustine,\u00a0<\/em>they\u2019re actually\u00a0 weapons \u00a0in our struggle against Satan. If \u00a0<\/em>we don\u2019t despair when we run into trouble, then Satan loses, \u00a0and we\u2019re \u00a0made stronger by the struggle.<\/em><\/p>\n

You have made me the reproach of the foolish. You have so willed it, that I should live among those, and preach the Truth among those, who love vanity; and I can\u2019t help being laughingstock to them. For \u201cwe have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men\u201d (1 Cor. 4:9): to angels who praise us, and to men who censure us. Or rather to angels, some of whom praise, some of whom are censuring us, and to men also, some of whom are praising, and some censuring us.<\/p>\n

Both the one and the other are weapons for us. The one is on the right hand, the other on the left, but both of them are weapons. Both of these kinds of weapons, both those on the right hand and those on the left\u2014both those who praise, and those who censure\u2014both those who pay us honor, and those who heap dishonor upon us\u2014with both these kinds, I say, I fight against the devil; with both of these I strike him. I defeat him with prosperity, if I am not corrupted by it; I defeat him by adversity, if I am not broken in spirit by it. \u2013St. Augustine, Exposition on Psalm 39<\/em>, 15<\/p>\n
