<\/a>Scripture isn\u2019t just for monks, says St. John Chrysostom. In fact, the more involved you are with the world, the more you need Scripture.. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cI\u2019m not a monk,\u201d you might say. \u201cI have a wife and children. I have to take care of my household.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n But this is what ruins everything\u2014your thinking that only monks need to read the divine Scriptures. You need it much more than they do. Those who live in the world and are wounded every day have the most need of medicines. So it\u2019s far worse than not reading to think that you don\u2019t need to read. That\u2019s a devilish idea. Don\u2019t you hear Paul saying that these things \u201cwere written down for our instruction\u201d (1 Corinthians 10:11)? <\/span><\/p>\n If you want to know how important it is to read Scripture, examine yourself. Think what you become by hearing the Psalms, and what you become by listen\u00ading to a song of Satan. Think how you feel when you stay in a church, and how you feel when you sit in a theater. Then you\u2019ll see that there is a great difference between this soul and that, although they\u2019re both the same soul.
