Charlotte, N.C., Sep 6, 2012 \/ 04:01 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- The Diocese of Charlotte is holding a Vigil for Liberty with Eucharistic adoration at St. Patrick Cathedral just a mile away from the Democratic National Convention.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe Catholic Diocese of Charlotte is pleased to offer a gift to our nation, and that is over 80 hours of Eucharistic adoration and prayer for our country,\u201d Bishop Peter J. Jugis said in his homily for the vigil\u2019s Sept. 4 Mass.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWe are keeping our attention and our hearts fixed on Jesus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\tThe vigil began the morning of Monday, Sept. 3 and will run through 9 p.m. on Sept. 6.<\/p>\n

\tBishop Jugis said the faithful are \u201cmaking great sacrifices\u201d to come at all times of the day to pray for their country.<\/p>\n

\tPrayer, he said, \u201ckeeps us attuned to listening to God.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAll of our work on behalf of the unborn, all of our work on behalf of marriage and the family and for religious liberty, all of our work for the poor and for immigrants and for all social justice concern, are all deeply rooted in Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tDavid Hains, the Charlotte diocese\u2019s communications director, told\u00a0CNA Sept. 5 that as the Democratic National Convention approached the diocese began to receive \u201ca lot of inquiries\u201d from organizations and individuals in the diocese. They wanted to know how the diocese was going to respond to \u201cthis platform question or that candidate, or that sort of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWe thought the best response for political questions is prayer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\tHains said the vigil\u2019s organizers hope the prayer event will help advance \u201cthoughtful reflection\u201d among everyone, including politicians, reporters and protesters at the Democratic National Convention.<\/p>\n

\tBishop Jugis also had the diocese hang two large signs on the property of St. Peter\u2019s Catholic Church, which is across the street from where the convention is being held.<\/p>\n

\tOne six-foot by 10-foot banner proclaims \u201cReligious Liberty, The Soul of Democracy,\u201d while a six-foot by 27-foot banner reads, \u201cProtect the Unborn, Defend Marriage, Safeguard Religious Liberty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHains said the signs are \u201cbeing seen far and wide.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tBishop Jugis\u2019 Sept. 4 homily warned Catholics that their witness would not be easy.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe mission to bring gospel values to our culture will always be accompanied by the cross,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThere is no Gospel without suffering,\u201d he continued. \u201cThere will be struggle, there will be rejection.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tPrayer is essential \u201cso that we always stay in Christ\u2019s grace and Christ\u2019s love.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWithout prayer,\u201d he said, \u201cstrong headwinds will blow us away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHowever, Bishop Jugis looked to the Jesus\u2019 Resurrection as a sign of hope.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe lesson of the cross is that divine love always prevails,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
