Vatican City, Sep 11, 2012 \/ 10:34 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- The Vatican has appointed a renowned Swiss lawyer to help it meet international standards of financial transparency, after a largely positive report by the European body that monitors such issues.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe time is ripe, not for a slackening of commitment, but for renewed efforts to respond to the report\u2019s recommendations and ever more efficaciously pursue transparency and financial trustworthiness,\u201d said Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi in a Sept. 11 communique.<\/p>\n

\tAttorney Rene Bruelhart, 40, has been recruited by the Vatican as a consultant to \u201cassist the Holy See in strengthening its framework to fight financial crimes,\u201d Fr. Lombardi said. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\tBruelhart previously spent eight years as the director of Liechtenstein\u2019s Financial Intelligence Unit. In 2010 he was also appointed as vice-chair of the Egmont Group, the global network of Financial Intelligence Units.<\/p>\n

\tIn July the Council of Europe\u2019s Committee of experts on the Evaluation of Anti-Money Laundering Measures and the Financing of Terrorism \u2013 Moneyval \u2013 found the Vatican to be \u201ccompliant\u201d or \u201clargely compliant\u201d on nine of the 16 \u201ckey and core\u201d recommendations for combating terrorist financing and money-laundering. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe Holy See has come a long way in a very short period of time and many of the building blocks of anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism regime are now formally in place,\u201d concluded the Moneyval report July 18.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cBut further important issues still need addressing in order to demonstrate that a fully effective regime has been instituted in practice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tAmong Moneyval\u2019s areas for concern was skepticism over the \u201cworkability\u201d of the Vatican\u2019s internal scrutiny body, the Financial Information Authority, which was created in 2010. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\tThe Vatican had invited Moneyval to inspect its financial set up in February 2011 after passing new transparency legislation towards the end of 2010.<\/p>\n

\tFr. Lomardi said the Vatican\u2019s appointment of Bruelhart was \u201ca powerful sign of its commitment\u201d to working on those areas of financial transparency that require improvement.<\/p>\n
