CNA<\/a>).- In her new book, Karen Handel relays the story behind the \u201caggressive\u201d and \u201cpartisan\u201d attacks from Planned Parenthood following the breast cancer charity's announcement to cut grant funding.<\/p>\n\tHandel told CNA that when Komen for the Cure announced Feb. 1 that it had decided to restructure funds to Planned Parenthood, the charity \u201cwas trying to make a common sense business decision.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tHowever, what followed was what Komen's former Vice President of Public Policy called \u201ca massive premeditated attack on a breast cancer organization\u201d by Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n
\tIn a Sept. 7 interview, Handel outlined her new book \u201cPlanned Bullyhood: The Truth about the Funding Battle with Susan G. Komen for the Cure,\u201d which was released Sept. 11 from Howard Books.<\/p>\n
\tWhen the announcement was made earlier this year, Planned Parenthood had received funds from the organization for breast-cancer education and screening, but not actual mammograms.<\/p>\n
\tKomen decided that they needed to move away from \u201cpass-through grants\u201d or grants that would be used by one organization to pass along to another, such as was the case with Planned Parenthood in its outsourcing for mammograms. The charity also wanted to pull funding from any organization undergoing investigation, which included Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n
\tBut on Feb. 3, founder and CEO of Komen for the Cure, Nancy Brinker, apologized to \u201cthe American public\u201d for the original decision and said she did not want her charity \u201cmarred or affected by politics.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tHandel said that at the time, Planned Parenthood and its president Cecile Richards \u201ctried to portray themselves as victims when, in reality, they were the big bullies in all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tThe outcry following the announcement to cut funding, which was $680 thousand last year and $580 thousand the year before, \u201cwas not about money\u201d for Planned Parenthood, but about \u201cmaking a point.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cMaking a point that organizations were going to do what (Planned Parenthood) said or they would pay,\u201d Handel said. \u201cAnd they exacted a high price from Komen.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cWhat I find so despicable about it is that, while Planned Parenthood is trying to claim that they are all about women, they had no qualms about trying to destroy an organization that is truly about saving women,\u201d Handel said.<\/p>\n
\tHandel believes Komen should have \u201cstayed the course\u201d in their decision, which was \u201cnever about anything but the best interests of women.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cIn capitulating to the political outcry,\u201d of Planned Parenthood, however, she said the decision \u201cbecame about politics.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tHandel decided to step down from her position at Komen \u201cout of fairness to the organization\u201d when she realized that Planned Parenthood would \u201cnot rest until I wasn't there.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cI knew that I had to leave,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd that decision was made the moment Komen capitulated.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tAlthough many media sources reported on the surge in donations to Planned Parenthood following Komen's announcement, most failed to mention the significant increase to the breast cancer charity in wake of their grant restructuring announcement.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cI can't really talk about the number because, as a (former) member of senior management, that is something I would consider proprietary to Komen,\u201d Handel said, \u201cbut I can tell you their contributions did go up dramatically in those three days.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tHandel said she hopes her book will highlight the amount of tax dollars that fund the nation's largest\u00a0 abortion provider, as well as the organization's political dealings.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cThe average person,\u201d Handel said, \u201cdoes not know that it is nearly $1.5 million a day,\u201d that goes to Planned Parenthood from \u201cour tax dollars\u201d.<\/p>\n
\tSimilarly, Handel said prior to her involvement with Komen, she \u201chad absolutely no idea\u201d how much time and money Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards has spent in \u201cthe political arena.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tRichards has been an avid supporter of President Obama and his Affordable Care Act which would require employers to purchase insurance that covers abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization and birth control even if doing so violates their consciences.<\/p>\n
\tIn a Sept. 5 blog entry for The Huffington Post, Richards championed the president as having\u00a0 \u201cdone more to advance women's health than any president in history,\u201d which is \u201cwhy we're fighting for him in this election.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tHandel said such a strong presence in politics is inappropriate for an organization that receives\u00a0approximately $500 million a year in federal funding.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cI would submit that for an organization that is using government funding,\u201d Handel said, \u201cto be so blatantly involved in politics is something that we should all have real concerns about.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tPlanned Parenthood has been the subject of a federal investigation headed by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) since last year. The investigation was launched after the pro-life group Americans United for Life issued a report indicating financial irregularities and involvement in assisting those involved in sex-trafficking and prostitution.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cUltimately,\u201d Handel said, \u201cI hope (Komen) can come out of this stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n
