CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Evangelization and the pastoral tending of souls are among the main goals for Bishop James D. Conley, who was named the ninth bishop of Lincoln by Pope Benedict today.<\/p>\n\t\u201cThere is nothing more important for a bishop than the care of souls,\u201d Bishop Conley told members of his new diocese at a Sept. 14 press conference.<\/p>\n
\tWith the support of the diocese, he said he has \u201cone aim\u201d consisting of three parts; that all men and women will \u201ccome to know Jesus Christ,\u201d that they \u201clive in the abundance of his love,\u201d and in turn strive to \u201cbecome holy as our Father in heaven is holy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cI am dedicated above all else to this noble mission,\u201d he said. \u201cI am grateful to know that I can already count on your prayers and your collaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tBishop Conley will replace Bishop Fabian W. Bruskewitz, who has served the diocese for over 20 years and submitted his resignation according to Church procedure upon reaching his 75th birthday in 2010.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cHe has been a true champion of the Catholic faith and he has been a personal hero of mine for years,\u201d Bishop Conley said. \u201cAll of us owe him a great debt of gratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tBishop Bruskewitz assured Bishop Conley of his new diocese's support in a Sept. 14 statement.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cWe promise Bishop Conley our prayers and dedicated support in all his undertakings and apostolic labors here in Southern Nebraska,\u201d he said. \u201cWe cannot be happier about this appointment.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tBishop Conley, whose installation will take place Nov. 20 in the Cathedral of the Risen Christ, has chosen \u201cheart speaks to heart,\u201d from Bl. John Henry Newman as his episcopal motto.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cI hope that as our hearts speak with one another,\u201d he said, \u201call of us may encounter the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tBishop Conley, who was raised Presbyterian, has \u201ca heart for evangelization,\u201d he said, as he converted to Catholicism in college and even \u201chad the privilege\u201d of receiving his parents into the Church after he was ordained a priest.<\/p>\n
\tAs the Church nears the start of the Year of Faith, Bishop Conley said he is eager to begin his work in sharing the Catholic faith with non-Catholics, especially those who are \u201cin their student years.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tBishop Conley served as pastor of Wichita State University's Newman Center, chaplain to the University of Dallas' Rome Campus and was an adjunct instructor of theology for Christendom College's Rome Campus.<\/p>\n
\tHe said he has already heard of the University of Nebraska Newman Center's \u201cstellar reputation\u201d and is \u201cfilled with great joy\u201d over what he called an \u201cimportant apostolate.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tLincoln, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary as a diocese, has long been known for its \u201csteadfast defense of the unborn, civil and religious liberty, traditional marriage between a man and a woman, and strong family values,\u201d Bishop Conley noted.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cI am not yet the Bishop of Lincoln,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I am already proud of the people of this great state.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tWhile looking forward to \u201cforging the bonds of fraternity and friendship\u201d with them, Bishop Conley said he is excited to know the priests of Lincoln \u201cas brothers in the vineyard of the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tIn closing, Bishop Conley thanked all those who have aided him throughout life including Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila of Denver, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia, his family and most especially, the Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n
\tBishop Conley dedicated his ministry to the Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception, who is the patroness of the Diocese of Lincoln.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cShe is our life, our sweetness and our hope,\u201d he said. \u201cOf course, I wish to consecrate my ministry here in Lincoln to the Blessed Virgin Mary.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tMen and women religious, whose \u201cconsecration serves the whole Church\u201d, are a \u201csign of the universal vocation to holiness,\u201d Bishop Conley said.<\/p>\n
\tThe Diocese of Lincoln is home to over 95,000 Catholics in 136 parishes, has 150 priests and 141 women religious, and is home to one diocesan seminary, St. Gregory the Great, and one religious seminary, Our Lady of Guadalupe.<\/p>\n
\tBishop Conley noted his history with the Diocese of Lincoln, pointing out that while in Wichita, he served under Bishop Michael O. Jackels and Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted who were \u201cboth men chosen as bishops from the ranks of the Lincoln presbyterate.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tHe said he is also familiar with the legacies of Archbishop James V. Casey and Bishop J. Henry Tihen, both of whom served first as bishops in Lincoln and then Denver.<\/p>\n
