Washington D.C., Jun 11, 2015 \/ 03:56 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Abortion rates have declined by 12 percent nationwide since 2010, and pro-life groups say changing attitudes among the younger generation could be the cause.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWe\u2019re seeing the attitudes shift,\u201d said Kristan Hawkins, president of the group Students for Life of America, which conducts pro-life outreach on college campuses. \u201cPeople are talking about abortion differently.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tAbortions rates have declined in almost every state since 2010, with only two states seeing significant increases since then, according to a survey by the Associated Press.<\/p>\n

\tThe biggest declines took in Hawaii \u2013 a 30 percent decrease \u2013 and New Mexico, Rhode Island, Nevada, and Connecticut, all with over a 20 percent drop.<\/p>\n

\tThe declines occurred in both states that recently passed pro-life laws restricting abortion and in states that did not, the AP noted. This is evidence of a \u201ccomprehensive trend,\u201d said Chuck Donovan, president of the Charlotte Lozier Institute, the research arm of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List.<\/p>\n

\tAlthough many factors \u2013 including increased practice of abstinence, a change in the use of contraceptives, and more state pro-life laws \u2013 are probably behind the shift in numbers, the \u201cbottom explanation is a shift in public opinion,\u201d Donovan told CNA.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cMore children are being born and probably raised in families with a pro-life disposition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\tOther pro-life groups shared this assessment. Students for Life of America told CNA that college students increasingly think an unborn baby should receive \u201chuman rights\u201d during the first trimester of pregnancy, if not at conception.<\/p>\n

\tThis conclusion was drawn from the group\u2019s \u201cHuman Rights Tour,\u201d which asked students on 27 different college campuses when an unborn baby should have human rights, placing pictures before them of different stages of human development.<\/p>\n

\tAdvances in technology like the ultrasound machine shows that life is present even in the womb, Hawkins noted, and the youth are taking notice.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cCollege students \u2013 the first generation that has been able to see in great detail what life in the womb looks like \u2013 can easily see that the preborn child is a human being and deserves every right to life as anyone else,\u201d Hawkins stated. \u201cAbortion takes away that life and this generation knows it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe group Secular Pro-Life credited \u201cmultiple factors\u201d behind the falling abortion numbers, but emphasized that the \u201cbiggest change\u201d of recent years \u201cis the ascendance of pro-life millennials.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe abortion industry has historically relied on women in their twenties as its primary customer base. That base is shrinking as more and more young people acknowledge the science of preborn human life,\u201d said Kelsey Hazzard, president of Secular Pro-Life and a self-identified member of the millennial generation.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIncreasingly, we view abortion as a human rights violation rather than a religious issue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\tThe recent decline in abortions is a part of a larger, longer trend going back to 1980, Donovan said, a decline in abortions that \u201caccelerated\u201d in the early 1990s.<\/p>\n

\tAnd the trend is also reflected in an increasing number of mothers who carry their baby to term in an \u201cunintended\u201d pregnancy, rather than opting for abortion.<\/p>\n

\tThe rate of abortions from \u201cunintended pregnancies\u201d dropped significantly from 1994 to 2008 from over 50 percent to around 40 percent, Donovan said citing data from the Guttmacher Institute, a pro-choice research group.<\/p>\n

\tHe believes that this trend continued past 2008 if the \u201coverall trend lines\u201d are read correctly, that abortions in almost all states dropped from 2008 to 2011.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWomen are changing their minds about keeping their babies,\u201d he said.
