Rome, Italy, Sep 22, 2012 \/ 05:09 pm (CNA<\/a>).- Scholars at a two-day conference in Rome explored the beauty of God\u2019s plan for the marital union and the importance of this union for individuals and society as a whole.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe goal of the conference is to examine, to analyze what the conjugal union really is,\u201d said Father Jose Granados, of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, which organized the conference at the request of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.<\/p>\n

\tHeld September 20-21, the international colloquium focused on \u201cThe Language of the Body and the Conjugal Union.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tIt featured experts in the fields of psychology, sociology, philosophy, theology and scripture, and examined different aspects of the conjugal union and its profound importance.<\/p>\n

\tFr. Granados explained that the culture does not see the marital union as something that is \u201cvaluable\u201d and has \u201cdefinite form,\u201d but rather as something that can be defined as one chooses.<\/p>\n

\tThe conference was designed to analyze \u201cthe richness of this union,\u201d which is properly understood \u201cin light of the Creator\u201d because it is possible only through the human body\u2019s complementary nature, he said.<\/p>\n

\tThe conjugal union is profound because it is open to life, enriches society and allows for mutual self-giving \u201cfor the other,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n

\tFr. Granados said that the colloquium was \u201cvery fruitful\u201d in presenting these truths to attendees.<\/p>\n

\tTo spread the message about the unique and important role of marriage, Catholics must first \u201cunderstand the beauty of God\u2019s plan,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\tAttracted by the \u201ccall to love,\u201d the faithful can be drawn into \u201cthe proposal of something beautiful and great,\u201d which leads to a fruitful life, he said.<\/p>\n

\tGod\u2019s plan for marriage views the family \u201cnot as a problem,\u201d he continued, but as a means of building up the Church. And the family is also crucial for a New Evangelization, he added.<\/p>\n

\tUnfortunately, he observed, our modern, post-Christian society \u201cregards Christ as something from the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe family can make us aware again of this original experience of love that allows us to receive Christ in a new way, as something that opens up a future, not only something from the past,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\tFr. Granados also noted that there is a connection between attacks on marriage and struggles with religious vocations, which are both manifestations of the universal \u201cvocation to love.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe two problems are related,\u201d he explained, \u201cbecause the first place in which a vocation grows is the family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWhen the Church focuses on one of them, it is also cultivating the other,\u201d he said, adding that both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI have worked to strengthen families so that they can play the foundational role they are designed to play.<\/p>\n

\tDamon Owens, executive director of the Theology of the Body Institute in Philadelphia, said that the conference did a \u201cbeautiful\u201d job of presenting \u201ca number of different perspectives\u201d on both the human and transcendent sense of the conjugal act.<\/p>\n

\tWith this foundation established, he said, the next step is to effectively communicate the truth about the sexual union to people living out marriages.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThere really needs to be a new dialogue and understanding what marriage is,\u201d Owens said, so that both the human and transcendent senses \u201ccan come together in a way that\u2019s understandable by those who are living it, but also connected more deeply to the truth of what marriage and marital relation is.\u201d<\/p>\n
