Springfield, Ill., Sep 27, 2012 \/ 02:11 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Drawing particular attention to the Democratic Party platform\u2019s support for \u201cintrinsic evils\u201d like abortion and \u201csame-sex marriage,\u201d Bishop Thomas J. Paprocki of Springfield, Ill. has said Catholics need to \u201cthink and pray very carefully\u201d about their votes in the upcoming election.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cMy job is not to tell you for whom you should vote. But I do have a duty to speak out on moral issues,\u201d Bishop Paprocki said in his Sept. 23 column for the Catholic Times diocesan paper. \u201cI would be abdicating this duty if I remained silent out of fear of sounding \u2018political\u2019 and didn't say anything about the morality of these issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHe said that voting for a candidate who promotes actions or behaviors that are \u201cintrinsically evil and gravely sinful\u201d makes a voter \u201cmorally complicit\u201d and places the eternal salvation of his or her soul in \u201cserious jeopardy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThere are \u201cmany positive and beneficial planks\u201d in the Democratic Party platform, the bishop said, but some promote \u201cserious sins.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tIn 2008, he noted, the platform dropped its call for abortion to be \u201csafe, legal and rare\u201d in favor of the language \u201csafe and legal.\u201d It now supports abortion \u201cregardless of the ability to pay.\u201d He said this means either taxpayer funding for abortion, mandatory insurance coverage, or coercion of hospitals to perform the procedures for free.<\/p>\n

\tBishop Paprocki added that the Democrats\u2019 national platform supports \u201csame-sex marriage,\u201d deems gay rights to be \u201chuman rights\u201d and calls for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act which defines marriage as the legal union of one man and one woman in federal law.<\/p>\n

\tThe bishop noted the existence of Republicans who support legalized abortion and others who support \u201csame-sex marriage.\u201d He said they are \u201cequally as wrong as their Democratic counterparts\u201d but their positions do not have official party support.<\/p>\n

\tBishop Paprocki also examined the Republican Party platform and found that it has \u201cnothing in it that supports or promotes an intrinsic evil or a serious sin.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe platform\u2019s support for allowing courts the option of imposing the death penalty in capital murder cases is not inherently opposed to Church teaching. He cited the Catechism of the Catholic Church\u2019s teaching that the death penalty is permissible if it is the only possible way to defend human life.<\/p>\n

\tBishop Paprocki said that party differences about the needs of the poor and the challenges of immigration are \u201cprudential judgments about the most effective means of achieving morally desirable ends, not intrinsic evils.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHe concluded his column with a prayer that God give Catholic voters the \u201cwisdom and guidance to make the morally right choices.\u201d<\/p>\n
