New York City, N.Y., Oct 3, 2012 \/ 02:03 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Church leaders in New York called for continued efforts by both government and private charities to address high levels of poverty while respecting the human dignity of the poor.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAs the Church celebrates the feast of St. Vincent DePaul, we affirm that the poor must receive our special attention to ensure that they have basic necessities of life,\u201d said Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York and Bishop Nicholas A. DiMarzio of Brooklyn.
\n\t\u00a0
\n\tIn a joint statement issued Sept. 27, the bishops pointed to the example of St. Vincent de Paul, the 17th century saint known for his concern for the poor and the society in his name that continues the work of bringing charitable aid to those in need.<\/p>\n

\tSuch charitable effort, along with government aid, are important in relieving those suffering from the greatest poverty, they said.<\/p>\n

\tThrough soup kitchens, homeless shelters and other family and youth services, Catholics Charities in New York serves \u201cliterally hundreds of thousands of people each year \u2013 the neglected child, the homeless family, the hungry senior, the new immigrant to our shores,\u201d they noted.<\/p>\n

\tIn addition to this important work, government \u201cmust continue to play its part as well,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

\tThe prelates pointed to recent statistics indicating that \u201ca shocking number\u201d of Americans are currently in poverty, and \u201crecovery is nowhere in sight.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n

\tWith income declining and poverty on the rise, they observed, the current statistics \u201care overwhelming.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe basics human needs of good jobs, food, and housing continue to challenge tens of millions throughout this country,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

\tThe combination of a \u201cpersistent sluggish economic and slow pace of recovery\u201d fails to provide the jobs for those in poverty to support themselves and offers fewer resources \u201cfor government to do its part for Americans in need,\u201d they added.

\n\t\u201cThis is creating a situation that is devastating to struggling families throughout the country,\u201d they warned.
\n\t\u00a0
\n\tBut despite these ongoing struggles for people across the country, Cardinal Dolan and Bishop DiMarzio said, \u201cwe are fortunate that as a society we do try to provide for those struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cGovernment programs provide enormous support to poor Americans,\u201d they noted. \u201cIn addition generous Americans contribute billions to charities each year.\u201d \u00a0

\n\tHowever, despite this generosity, \u201cmuch more needs to be done\u201d by both private charities and the government, they said.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThroughout the history of the Church there has always been a preferential option for the poor,\u201d the prelates explained. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\tThey noted that \u201cthe commitment of the Church to the poor comes directly from Jesus and was first formally recognized by the appointment of deacons to cares for the Greek speaking widows.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThis commitment and dedication continues and grows today throughout Catholic hospitals, charities and educational institutions,\u201d they said. \u201cAll of these in their own way make service to the poor the hallmark of their work in building the common good.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n

\tIn addition, Cardinal Dolan and Bishop DiMarzio warned of rhetoric that \u201cportrays poor people in a very negative way.\u201d

\n\t\u201cThere is too much finger pointing and not enough joining hands,\u201d they said. \u201cSolidarity is critical to ensure the dignity of all.\u201d<\/p>\n
