Washington D.C., Oct 3, 2012 \/ 03:55 pm (CNA<\/a>).- President Barack Obama's re-election campaign has drawn criticism amid allegations that its members have been making bigoted election calls to Catholics attacking the Mormon faith<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\tDeal Hudson, political activist and president of the Pennsylvania Catholics Network, warned that members of the Obama campaign have been making phone calls asking voters, \u201cHow can you support a Mormon who does not believe in Jesus Christ?\u201d

\n\tOn Sept. 26 and Oct. 2, Hudson reported that a campaign group known as \u201cCatholics for Obama\u201d was making calls directed at raising doubts about Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney\u2019s Mormon faith.<\/p>\n

\tIn articles posted on Catholic Online, he said that Joy Allen, co-chair of the pro-life committee at Sts. John and Paul Catholic parish in Franklin Park, Pa., received two phone calls asking for her college-age children.<\/p>\n

\tIn both cases, the callers identified themselves as being from the Obama campaign and said that they were practicing Catholics and Obama supporters before asking Allen how she could possibly support a Mormon, he said.<\/p>\n

\tReading from the same script, he added, the callers also tried to assert that neither President Obama nor Planned Parenthood promotes abortion and to discuss the pro-Obama \u201cNuns on the Bus\u201d campaign.

\n\tWhen questioned about the reports, an Obama campaign official told CNA that the campaign considers a candidate\u2019s religion to be off-limits but did not respond to questions about the alleged calls.<\/p>\n

\tHudson and Deacon Keith Fournier, editor in chief at Catholic Online, argued that the campaign is guilty of \u201cplaying the Mormon card,\u201d which is \u201cinsulting to Catholics with the accompanying presumption that such prejudice appeals to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tIn an Oct. 3 article, Hudson and Fournier criticized the \u201ceruption of bigotry on the phone lines\u201d and called for an apology from the Obama campaign as \u201can extremely civilized and appropriate gesture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tPrinceton University law professor Robert P. George called on all Catholics to condemn \u201cthe anti-Mormon bigotry of these calls.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cI don\u2019t know who is behind these calls, but the Obama campaign should, in all decency, immediately try to figure it out and shut them down,\u201d he said in an Oct. 2 post on \u201cFirst Thoughts,\u201d a blog sponsored by the ecumenical journal, \u201cFirst Things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tGeorge described the allegations as \u201cthe most egregious of many nauseating examples of the anti-Mormon bigotry that has crawled out of the swamp in relation to Governor Romney\u2019s nomination as the Republican candidate for president.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tWhile other examples may be more subtle and sophisticated, they are \u201cno less appalling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\tThe \u201cextraordinary decency, generosity, and patriotism\u201d of the overwhelming majority of Mormons<\/a>, and their \u201ccontributions to the common good of our society\u201d make this defamation \u201cparticularly grotesque,\u201d George argued.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWhether or not we happen to support Governor Romney in this campaign, we Catholics should be united in our friendship with, and high regard for, the Latter-Day Saints,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
