Vatican City, Dec 19, 2015 \/ 03:11 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Pope Francis on Saturday addressed rail workers, remembering the hard and sometimes deadly work that built the railways of Italy. He invited them all to embrace God\u2019s \u201cmedicine of mercy\u201d in the Catholic Church\u2019s year of Mercy.<\/p>\n

Speaking to about 7,000 rail workers in Vatican City\u2019s Paul VI Hall, the Pope remembered \u201cthe many people who have worked hard\u201d to build the Italian State Railway rail network in its 110 years of existence.

\n\u201cNot a few workers have also lost their lives in this labor,\u201d he said Dec. 19. \u201cWe remember them all \u2013 and let us make it so that \u2013 so far as it is in our power \u2013 such things do not happen anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

He praised the collaboration between Italian railways, local authorities and non-profit organizations that have created support centers to for people in need. These centers help keep Italy united geographically and as a society by preventing people from being left behind.<\/p>\n

He also spoke about the Don Luigi Di Liegro homeless shelter and hostel, where he had celebrated Mass on Friday and opened a special Holy Door there for the Catholic Church\u2019s Jubilee Year of Mercy.<\/p>\n

The Pope said the Year of Mercy is a reminder that mercy is \u201cthe first and most real medicine for humans.\u201d Mercy is \u201ca medicine which everyone needs urgently.\u201d<\/p>\n

While mercy from God is continuous and abundant, we must be able to show mercy to each other \u201cso that everyone can live the fullness of his humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those who pass through the Holy Door with love will find \u201cforgiveness and consolation,\u201d Pope Francis said. They will be motivated to give generously and to give of themselves, \u201cfor the salvation of their brothers.\u201d He encouraged people to take part in the Year of Mercy to help renew society and make it more just and united during a time that the Pope has characterized as a \u201cpiecemeal\u201d World War III.<\/p>\n

He encouraged Italy and all countries to become places of solidarity networks and to become \u201cmore authentically human\u201d and more able to rejoice in the love of God.<\/p>\n
