Vatican City, Oct 9, 2012 \/ 02:15 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York told the synod of bishops gathered\u00a0at the Vatican that \u201cthe primary sacrament of the New Evangelization is the sacrament of penance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cYes the sacraments of initiation \u2013 baptism, confirmation and the Eucharist \u2013 change, challenge and equip the agents of evangelization, but the sacrament of reconciliation evangelizes the evangelizers, as it brings us sacramentally into contact with Jesus who calls us to conversion of heart and inspires (us) to answer his invitation to repentance,\u201d Cardinal Dolan said on Oct. 9, the third day of the synod.<\/p>\n

\tCardinal Dolan is one of seven U.S. bishops present at the synod, which runs October 7-28 and was convened by Pope Benedict to discuss the theme of \u201cThe New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tSpeaking in the presence of the Pope, Cardinal Dolan proposed that for a new evangelization to happen \u201cthe very agents of evangelization must first be evangelized themselves,\u201d and that begins with sacramental confession.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\tWith only 48 hours to go before the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council\u2019s opening, he lamented the fact that while the council \u201ccalled for a renewal of the sacrament of penance,\u201d what emerged \u201csadly, in many places, was the disappearance of the sacrament.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tInstead, he recalled, the conclusion of Vatican II in 1965 saw a series of demands for the \u201creform of structures, systems, institutions and people other than ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tBut the answer to the question \u201cwhat is wrong with the world?\u201d proved was not external factors like \u201cpolitics, the economy, secularism, pollution or global warming,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cNo, as G.K. Chesterton wrote, the answer to the question what is wrong with the world is two words: \u2018I am.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\tCardinal Dolan stated in his remarks to his 250 fellow bishops that paving the way for a personal \u201cconversion of heart and repentance,\u201d which is the \u201ccore of the Gospel invitation,\u201d requires a recognition of personal sin.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThis happens in the sacrament of penance. This is the sacrament of the New Evangelization,\u201d he said to warm applause from the assembled Synod Fathers, experts and observers.<\/p>\n
