Washington D.C., Nov 1, 2012 \/ 09:49 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- To encourage believers during the Year of Faith, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has released a reflection on the Catechism as a faith resource that is universal in nature, as well as a call to prayer.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe Catechism of the Catholic Church is the first book of its kind in 450 years,\u201d said
\n\tAlissa Thorell, catechism specialist for the conference\u2019s Secretariat of Evangelization and Catechesis.<\/p>\n

\tShe described the Catechism as \u201can effort by the world's bishops to convey the content of the Catholic faith to the whole Church and the whole world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tAfter the Second Vatican Council, which was held from 1962-65, \u201cit was important for the Church to present its teachings for Catholics living in the modern world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\tOn Oct. 31, the U.S. bishops\u2019 conference released reflections by Thorell on \"Five Things Catholics Should Know About the Catechism\" in order to better understand their faith.<\/p>\n

\tPope Benedict XVI has called on Catholics to study the Catechism during the ongoing Year of Faith, which runs from Oct. 11, 2012 \u2013 Nov. 24, 2013.<\/p>\n

\tThe year \u2013 which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism \u2013 is an opportunity for Catholics to grow in their own faith so that they may witness to others.<\/p>\n

\tThe Catechism is universal in both scope and content, Thorell explained. It \u201ccompiles the living tradition of the Catholic Church,\u201d which is divided into four sections on beliefs, worship and sacraments, morality and prayer.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe contents of these four parts are interwoven, providing an organic presentation of the faith,\u201d she said.
\n\t\u00a0
\n\tThorell also noted that the Catechism is both \u201ca resource for education\u201d and \u201can invitation (to) prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe main goal of the Catechism is to help bishops, pastors, catechists, parents and all who teach the faith,\u201d she said. \u201cIt provides a foundation that encourages dioceses to draw their own teaching materials from it.\u201d

\n\tAt the same time, it \u201cdraws from the richness of Catholic tradition, including the lives of the saints, the teaching documents of the Church and Scripture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThis makes it not only useful for learning about the Catholic faith, but for growing in one's faith through meditation and prayer,\u201d Thorell explained.
\n\t\u00a0
\n\tAnd despite its length \u2013 700 pages \u2013 the Catechism is \u201cfor Catholics of all ages,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\tBesides the helpful summaries at the end of each section, Thorell recommended the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church \u2013 a much shorter document \u2013 which makes the Catechism \u201ceven more accessible to readers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cLearning and living the faith is an ongoing process throughout a person's entire life, and the Catechism can help Catholics come to know and love Christ,\u201d Thorell stressed.<\/p>\n
