Vatican City, Oct 1, 2016 \/ 10:01 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- In a special message to his fellow countrymen, Pope Francis said that despite his great desire to return home, he won\u2019t be able to go in 2017, as previously hoped, due to commitments in Asia and Africa.<\/p>\n

Francis had previously expressed his desire to return to his native Argentina for the country\u2019s bicentenary anniversary, as well as the coming beatification of Mama Antula and canonization of Cura Brochero, known as the \u201cGaucho priest\u201d and who will be the first saint who was born and died in Argentina.<\/p>\n

The canonization and beatification, he said, are events \u201cthat make our history\u201d and which are \u201cvery important and very strong, and which I greatly value.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNeedless to say I had wanted to go to Argentina to beatify Mama Antula and to canonize Cura Brochero, but I couldn\u2019t do it, it\u2019s not possible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Pope stressed that \u201cyou know how much I would like to see you,\u201d but relayed that he isn\u2019t able to go next year either \u201cbecause there are already commitments fixed for Asia and Africa,\u201d though he didn\u2019t give details.<\/p>\n

Plus, \u201cthe world is larger than Argentina,\u201d he said, adding that he would leave it in God\u2019s hands \u201cto tell me the date\u201d of a possible future visit.<\/p>\n

Francis made the announcement in a video message that was released by the Vatican paper L\u2019Osservatore Romano\u2019s local, Argentinian version, which is the first national edition of the publication.<\/p>\n

In his message, the Pope said he continues to feel like an Argentinian, and still travels with an Argentine passport.<\/p>\n

As a people, Argentinians \u201care the greatest treasure our homeland has,\u201d he said. The Pope said he feels joy and consolation whenever he receives letters from his fellow countrymen, and that he prays for \u201ceach one of you, for your needs,\u201d at Mass.<\/p>\n

He encouraged them to work toward a culture of encounter capable of overcoming \u201call these cultures of waste that are offered everywhere in today\u2019s world.\u201d<\/p>\n

This type of culture, he said, would be one in which each person has their place and in which \u201cthe whole world can live with dignity and each can peacefully express themselves without being insulted or condemned, attacked or discarded.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prayer and good will are the primary tools needed in order to achieve this culture, he said, and encouraged his countrymen to do at least one work of mercy every day, or every two days if everyday is impossible.<\/p>\n

Listing out the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, Francis said they are concrete acts that each person can do. \u201cIf each of us does one a day or one every two days, what good we will do for our people!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Pope assured his closeness to the Argentine people, particularly on the occasion of the coming beatification of Mama Antula and the canonization of Cura Brochero, \u201ctwo people, a man and a woman, who worked for the homeland and for evangelization.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo in the midst of all this I greet you, I give you my love and I tell you \u2013 it seems a bit odd, but time has stretched like elastic \u2013 see you soon, and don\u2019t forget to pray for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
