San Jos\u00e9, Costa Rica, Dec 17, 2012 \/ 04:02 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- The Bishops\u2019 Conference of Costa Rica called on the nation\u2019s lawmakers to promote the good of the family by preserving marriage as the union of one man and one woman.<\/p>\n

\tIn a Dec. 12 statement, the bishops emphasized that marriage is the foundation of the family and is therefore \u201ca very important value that should be defended from every threat that jeopardizes its stability, its particular nature, essential properties and undeniable ends.\u201d

\n\tFor this reason, the bishops explained that they have repeatedly opposed various bills that would \u201cmake same-sex unions equivalent to heterosexual marriage,\u201d noting that such legislation \u201cundermines the institution of marriage\u201d and distorts the \u201cunderstanding of fundamental moral values.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThey cautioned that gay advocates and some lawmakers \u2013 aided by sympathetic media reports \u2013 are trying to change the definition of marriage in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n

\tSuch efforts must be rejected, they said, for the sake of families and the good of society.<\/p>\n

\tThe bishops emphasized that the Catholic Church respects every human being and rejects \u201call real discrimination\u201d against persons with homosexual tendencies. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\t\u201cHowever, the Church distinguishes between respect for all persons regardless of their sexual orientation, and rejection of homosexual practices as acts that are objectively contrary to God\u2019s plan for the human being,\u201d they said.

\n\tFurthermore, they asserted, it is not necessary to legalize gay unions in order to secure \u201cthe common rights\u201d that gay individuals deserve \u201cas persons and citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThey explained that it is \u201ca grave injustice\u201d to sacrifice \u201cthe common good and the rights of the family\u201d in order to attain goods that \u201ccan and should be guaranteed through means that do not harm society.\u201d

\n\tThe bishops urged officials in all three branches of government to assess the constitutionality of \u201csame-sex marriage\u201d proposals. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWe especially encourage those who profess faith in Christ to consecrate themselves with sincerity, uprightness, charity and strength to the mission entrusted to them by the people,\u201d they said, \u201cnamely, to legislate based on ethical principles and for the benefit of the common good.\u201d<\/p>\n
