Vatican City, Mar 14, 2017 \/ 04:01 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Pope Francis urged Catholics in Tuesday\u2019s homily not only to avoid evil, but to pursue good in concrete actions, likening the Lenten conversion to a journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cAvoiding evil and learning to do good: this is the rule of conversion. Because being converted doesn\u2019t come from a fairy who converts us with a magic wand: No! It\u2019s a journey. It\u2019s a journey of avoiding and of learning,\u201d said the Pope during Mass at the Casa Santa Marta.<\/p>\n

Beginning his homily with the first step of the journey, the Pope said that we must recognize \u201cEach one of us, every day, does something ugly.\u201d He emphasized the importance of recognizing our own sins and he referenced to a quote from the book of Proverbs: \u201cFor though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again.\u201d<\/p>\n

This sin, he said, \u201cpoisons the soul,\u201d but he encouraged the faithful not to worry, for God responds with the words of the Prophet Isaiah: \u201cthough your sins should be like scarlet, they will become white as snow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pope Francis insisted that refusing evil is not enough, but we must learn to do good with a child-like attitude. He said, \u201cAlong the path of life, of the Christian life\u2026You have to learn every day to do something, to be better than the day before,\u201d and good must be practiced through concrete actions and not just words.<\/p>\n

The Pope pointed to the examples of Jesus in the Gospel: to \u201crelieve the oppressed, give orphans justice, defend the cause of the widow.\u201d He also spoke on the \u201cruling class of the people of Israel,\u201d rebuked by Christ \u201cbecause \u2018they talk and don\u2019t act,\u2019 they don\u2019t know concreteness.\u201d<\/p>\n

This Lenten conversion is difficult and doesn\u2019t occur over night, Pope Francis said, but added that the Lord walks \u201cwith us to help us, to explain things to us, to take us by the hand\u201d and heal our iniquities.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this is the path of Lenten conversion. Simple. It is the Father who speaks, it is the Father who loves us, who really loves us. And who accompanies us on this path of conversion.\u201d<\/p>\n
