London, England, Jan 15, 2013 \/ 12:02 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Facebook must be called on to refuse abortion ads that target U.K. women, says a pro-life leader who warns the practice \u201cthreatens to further commercialize the killing of unborn children.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cFacebook advertising will only serve the abortion industry\u2019s money-spinning trade which hurts women through killing their unborn children,\u201d Anthony Ozimic, communications manager with the London-based Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, told CNA Jan. 14.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cA large body of opposition on Facebook itself is essential to get Facebook to take action,\u201d he said, calling on pro-life advocates to use their Facebook networks, pages and groups to \u201cbuild up awareness of the ads and the objections to the ads.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHis comments come after Willard Foxton, social media blogger for the British newspaper The Telegraph, reported that many British women found targeted ads for \u201can abortion provider near you\u201d beginning on New Year\u2019s Day. The ad linked to a U.S.-based website that is a directory of doctors and facilities that offer \u201cabortion care.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tFoxton said some women reacted to the ad with humor, while others wondered what in their profile made Facebook\u2019s automated system decide to target them with the ads.<\/p>\n

\tA Facebook spokesperson told Foxton that the social network\u2019s rules allow \u201cadvertising of post-conception advice services.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cUnlike other media, if people don\u2019t like an advert they see on Facebook they are able to dismiss it by clicking \u2018X\u2019 on the corner of the ad,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\tFoxton said he thought the ad was \u201cseriously mistargeted\u201d\u00a0 and could have cost the advertiser close to $5 U.S. dollars per click. \u201cIf I were Facebook, I think I'd tighten up the rules around who sensitive adverts like this can target,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\tIn his comments to CNA, Ozimic voiced even stronger objection to the presence of the abortion advertisements. \u201cFacebook should no more carry ads for abortion than it should carry ads for infanticide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWhat sort of culture are we handing on the next generation, where killing babies are offered alongside car insurance, or holiday packages, or wedding dresses?\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHe charged that abortion agencies \u201cmislead women.\u201d They tell them that their unborn babies are \u201cjust the products of conception\u201d and that \u201cabortion is not killing but simply ending a pregnancy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\tOzimic said there is an \u201cunfair playing field\u201d in advertising favoring those who promote abortion over those who oppose it.<\/p>\n

\tPro-life pregnancy services in the U.K. are non-commercial and the costs of advertising on Facebook, mainstream newspapers, television and radio are too high. U.K. abortion groups, however, can \u201cdominate advertising\u201d with their income from private and government-funded abortion fees.<\/p>\n

\tHe said U.K. advertising regulators have previously shown \u201cbias\u201d against the pro-life movement.<\/p>\n

\tFacebook\u2019s website says it allows advertisers to target ads to users \u201cmost likely to be interested in your product or service.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tOzimic said he was not surprised that the ads targeted specific users. He compared the targeting to the practice of locating abortion clinics in \u201cpoor, black areas of cities\u201d in both the U.S. and the U.K.<\/p>\n

\tHe said that a boycott of Facebook would not be effective or well supported, but he predicted an awareness campaign on Facebook would have some success. He said users should \u201ccomplain to Facebook directly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tCNA contacted Facebook to determine whether the ads run in the U.S. but did not receive a reply by deadline.<\/p>\n
