Orlando, Fla., Mar 15, 2013 \/ 04:04 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- The unprecedented level of media devoted to the election of Pope Francis is a clear indicator of the importance of the Church today, a Catholic author and blogger reflected.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe main thing that struck me is what I'd call the paradox of irrelevancy,\u201d Brandon Vogt told CNA March 14, \u201cwhich is the world saying the Church is irrelevant but then turning its attention to the Church.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tIn the weeks leading up to Pope Francis' election, Vogt noted that much of the commentary from the secular press focused on how \u201coutdated\u201d and \u201cunimportant\u201d the Church is, yet when it came time for the conclave \u201call heads turn towards Rome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cBefore the conclave you have this great accusation of irrelevance,\u201d he explained, \u201cbut, paradoxically, at the conclave you have the most relevant event to the entire world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cI think what it shows is that deep down,\u201d Vogt said, \u201cthe secular world knows that the Church is relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe 26-year-old blogger is author of the acclaimed 2011 book, \u201cThe Church in the New Media.\u201d\u00a0His work has been featured in NPR, FoxNews, EWTN, Our Sunday Visitor and National Review.<\/p>\n

\tAs news of the white smoke indicating the election of a new Pontiff broke, Vogt said he was\u00a0shocked by the reaction he saw not only from the secular media, but also from non-Catholic friends in social media.<\/p>\n

\tVogt, who converted to Catholicism five years ago, said he was surprised to see that even his Protestant friends shared in the \u201cexhilaration and excitement\u201d of the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n

\tEven people in circles who would say that the Holy Father is \u201cnot important\u201d or even \u201ca spiritually dangerous figure\u201d watched the results with the \u201csame enthusiasm\u201d as Catholics, Vogt said.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cI think that all people, Catholics and non-Catholics, ultimately sense the transcendence of this event,\u201d he said. \u201cThey all know that something is going on that is bigger than us, that is bigger than America, that\u2019s bigger than the secular media (and is) something beyond our control and understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tAlthough the selection process of a new pontiff is \u201cshut off from the world,\u201d the \u201cuniversality\u201d of the Church was apparent in how the process brought \u201cthe world together as a community.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tIn the past, people may have gathered to watch the announcement on television, but most likely one would have learned of the news via radio or newspaper and then discussed it days later with friends or family.<\/p>\n

\tThis time, however, as soon as Pope Francis \u201cstepped down to the balcony,\u201d Vogt said, \u201cfriends and I were automatically exchanging pictures and articles and commentary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThat kind of communication and interaction \u201chas never happened before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tVogt said social media helped \u201cecho\u201d the universality of the Church as reaction to the first non-European Pope of the modern era flooded the internet.<\/p>\n

\tWithin the first hour of the Argentine's pontificate, Vogt said he was able to witness celebrations all over Latin America, read commentary from authors throughout Europe and view pictures from Africa.<\/p>\n

\tTaking the example of the conclave and election of Pope Francis, Vogt said that even if the public and the media does not, \u201cunderstand that it\u2019s God behind it\u201d the attention is received shows that \u201cthey sense the majesty, the beauty, the brilliance (and) the tradition of something great.\u201d<\/p>\n
