Santa Monica, Calif., Mar 17, 2013 \/ 04:03 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Three religious sisters are participating in a unique evangelization effort by competing on a Bible trivia game show in hopes of supporting their community.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThis isn\u2019t something we would normally do, but when the opportunity arose, Mother (Assumpta Long) discerned that it would be good not only for the benefit of our community, but also for the New Evangelization,\u201d Sr. Maria Suso of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist told CNA March 15.<\/p>\n

\tTeam Sisters of Mary will be featured on the March 21 season premiere of The American Bible Challenge, hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy on Game Show Network.<\/p>\n

\tFacing off against Team Preachin\u2019 Divas, a group of women dedicated to inner city outreach in Oakland, Calif., and Team Anointed Ink, a group of Texas-based tattoo artists who cover up questionable body art with religious symbols, the Sisters competed for a chance to win $100,000 for their charity of choice.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWe met the other teams and it was beautiful to see their love for the Scripture and their dedication to Christ,\u201d Sr. Suso said.<\/p>\n

\tAlthough Sr. Suso could not reveal how far she and a few of the community\u2019s novices, Sister Peter Joseph and Sister Evangeline, advanced in the game show \u2013 which has already been filmed \u2013 she did say that they all had \u201ca lot of fun\u201d competing to win money for their rapidly expanding order.<\/p>\n

\tFounded in 1997 with just four sisters in Ann Arbor, Mich., the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist have now grown to 120 members. The order\u2019s habited sisters are specially committed to Mary, the Blessed Sacrament and the New Evangelization.<\/p>\n

\tBy working to set aside money for the founding members\u2019 retirement, the younger sisters are seeking to show their gratitude for the women \u201cwho have really spent themselves in providing a community and a home for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIf they hadn\u2019t said \u2018yes\u2019 to God\u2019s call, what would we have done?\u201d Sr. Suso reasoned. \u201cOur vocations are here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tAside from trying to win money to support their community, Sr. Suso said their presence on the show was just one of the many ways their community is \u201cengaging with the culture to try to bring them to Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAnyone that sees us,\u201d she said, \u201cI hope would realize that the joy that we have and the love that we have for one another comes from Christ and that they can also come into contact with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tA deeper aspect of that mission is to help other people discern their vocation, Sr. Suso said.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cNo matter what we do, we are always on the lookout to help people to discern God\u2019s will in their lives,\u201d she said. \u201cI hope that there\u2019s a young woman out there, even if she doesn\u2019t come to our community, in whom it\u2019s stirred; the question whether or not God might be calling her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tAlthough she and her teammates were chosen to compete because of their knowledge of the Bible, Sr. Suso said preparing for the show gave them an even deeper appreciation of Scripture.<\/p>\n

\tShe explained that Catholics tend to focus on the \u201cbasic idea and the content\u201d of Sacred Scripture rather than the small details.<\/p>\n

\tWhile that aspect of the Bible is \u201cimportant,\u201d she said, \u201cthe Church Fathers didn\u2019t feel that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe Fathers of the Church,\u201d she said, \u201cmemorized the Scriptures and they knew all the details and they found them all significant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tIn their study of the Bible leading up to the show \u2013 and even more so after the show \u2013 Sr. Suso said she and her teammates have come \u201cto look at the Scriptures in a different way\u201d by learning \u201cto appreciate the details more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cI hope that encourages some Catholics to rededicate themselves to discovering the riches of the Scriptures.\u201d<\/p>\n
