Wellington, New Zealand, Apr 18, 2013 \/ 04:15 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Archbishop John Dew of Wellington, president of the Bishops\u2019 Conference of New Zealand, has expressed profound sadness over the authorization of \u2018gay marriage\u2019 by the country\u2019s Parliament on April 17.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWe find it bizarre that what has been discarded is an understanding of marriage that has its origin in human nature and is common to every culture,\u201d said Archbishop John Dew, according to CathNews.<\/p>\n

\tHe also voiced concern that \u201calmost all references to husband and wife will be removed from legislation referencing marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWe know many New Zealanders stand with us in this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\tBy a vote of 77-44, New Zealand became the first country in the Pacific region and the thirteenth country in the world to grant legal recognition to same-sex \u201cmarriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe law was sponsored by Labor representative Louisa Wall, who said it was necessary to secure \u201cequal rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tRepresentative Maurice Williamson, who supported the measure, dismissed Catholic criticism as \u201ccoming from someone who\u2019s taken an oath of celibacy for his whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHowever, Archbishop Dew stressed that marriage \u201cis founded on sexual difference\u201d and \u201creflects this unique reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cMarriage is the essential human institution that predates religion and state,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is a committed union between a man and a woman which has a natural orientation towards the procreation of new human life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWe\u2019ve been assured that our religious freedom to teach and practice marriage according to our religious beliefs is protected, and we will continue to ensure that this freedom is upheld,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
