Vatican City, Apr 19, 2013 \/ 07:15 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Pope Francis spent his homily today reflecting on responding to God\u2019s invitations with the heart and not just the intellect, since this leads to ideologies that falsify the Gospel and weigh down the Church.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe ideologues falsify the gospel. Every ideological interpretation, wherever it comes from \u2013 from (whatever side) \u2013 is a falsification of the Gospel,\u201d Pope Francis said April 19 at a Mass he celebrated for employees of the Vatican\u2019s printing press and newspaper.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAnd these ideologues, as we have seen in the history of the Church, end up being intellectuals without talent, ethicists without goodness \u2013 and let us not so much as mention beauty, of which they understand nothing,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\tThe Pope based his homily on today\u2019s readings from the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel of John.<\/p>\n

\tThe first reading, drawn from Acts, recalled the conversion of St. Paul on the Road to Damascus, while the Gospel was about Jesus telling the Jews in Capernaum\u2019s synagogue that they would not have eternal life unless they ate his flesh and drank his blood.<\/p>\n

\tEach time Jesus speaks, the Pope said, his voice \u201cpasses through our mind and goes to the heart, for Jesus seeks our conversion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe two main characters in the first reading, Paul and Ananias, respond like the great figures in salvation history, such as Jeremiah, Isaiah, Moses and Mary, he noted.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIt is the response of humility, of one who welcomes the Word of God with one\u2019s heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cBut the doctors,\u201d like those who heard Jesus speaking in the synagogue, \u201canswered only with their heads. They do not know that the Word of God goes to the heart, (they) do not know of conversion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThey are the ones who walk only \u2018on the path of duty,\u2019\u201d theirs is the moralistic (outlook) of those who pretend to understand the Gospel with their heads alone,\u201d the Pope explained.<\/p>\n

\tHowever, he cautioned, they are not \u201con the road to conversion, that conversion to which Jesus calls us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tIn fact, the moralists \u201cload everything on the shoulders of the faithful. The ideologues falsify the gospel.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tIn contrast the Holy Father pointed to \u201cthe path of love, the way of the Gospel,\u201d which \u201cis simple\u201d and is \u201cthe road that the saints understood.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tPope Francis finished his homily by encouraging all present to pray for the Church, \u201cthat the Lord might free her from any ideological interpretation and open the heart of the Church, our Mother Church, to the simple Gospel, to that pure Gospel that speaks to us of love, which brings love, and is so beautiful!<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIt also makes us beautiful, with the beauty of holiness,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
