CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Before meeting with the first Latin American Pope on Thursday, Colombian Cardinal Rub\u00e9n Salazar Gomez said the South American Church will help the universal Church with its rich history of evangelization.<\/p>\n\t\u201cThere is no doubt that the richness of the evangelizing experience of the Latin American Church is going to benefit the universal Church,\u201d Cardinal Rub\u00e9n Salazar Gomez told CNA on April 24.<\/p>\n
\tCardinal Salazar is the vice president of the Episcopal Council of Latin America and the Caribbean, or CELAM, and he met with the Pope on April 25 alongside the council\u2019s five other directors to greet him and offer their support.<\/p>\n
\tThe Colombian cardinal said that it was \u201cabout time\u201d that Latin America \u201cdonated\u201d a Pope to the Church.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cThis is for us a huge importance and a reason for profound joy,\u201d he commented.<\/p>\n
\tCardinal Salazar believes that the Church in South America needs to show \u201ca clear example\u201d of how the Church\u2019s evangelization efforts should look.<\/p>\n
\tCELAM has representatives from 22 bishops\u2019 conferences in Latin America and the Caribbean, and its leaders meet every year in Rome to visit the Pope, as well as the different Vatican departments.<\/p>\n
\tOn April 24 they visited the Pontifical Commission for Latin America and its members, including the commission\u2019s secretary, Guzm\u00e1n Carriquiry.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cOur annual visit to the Holy See is an opportunity to dialogue with dicasteries (departments) and be able to help them or to receive their petition to promote a certain subject,\u201d said Archbishop Carlos Aguiar Retes of Tlalnepantla, Mexico.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cIt is a pleasure to be able to meet the Pope,\u201d Archbishop Aguiar commented, \u201cand we want to tell him that he can count on us.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tPope Francis, he said, is not only \u201ca man of wisdom\u201d but also \u201ca decisive man who is capable of governing and knows clearly what the Church needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cI am certain he will carry out the reform that the cardinals proposed in the general congregations,\u201d Archbishop Aguiar said.<\/p>\n
\tIn his view, the fact that there is a Latin American Pope means \u201ca great responsibility\u201d for the Church on the continent.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cIt\u2019s true that it\u2019s a great joy but that it also means commitment,\u201d said Archbishop Aguiar.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cIt\u2019s not a joy for a short moment,\u201d he qualified, \u201cbut rather a joy that should move our conscience to realize that if God has set his eyes on a son of Latin America and on the Church that makes a pilgrimage there, he also wants that those that make up this Church give a specific and important contribution to the life of the Church, in general.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tCardinal Salazar, Archbishop Aguiar and three other bishops met with Pope Francis on April 25 at 11:45 in the morning.<\/p>\n
