Vatican City, Apr 30, 2013 \/ 09:00 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Israeli president Shimon Peres invited Pope Francis to visit the Holy Land during an April 30 meeting with him at the Vatican.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cI am expecting you in Jerusalem, not just me but the whole country of Israel,\u201d Peres told the Pope in the Apostolic Palace.<\/p>\n

\tHe made his invitation in front of journalists after holding a private 30-minute meeting with the pontiff in which they discussed the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

\tThe Vatican released a statement noting that \u201ca speedy resumption of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians is hoped for.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cSo that,\u201d it added, \u201cwith the courageous decisions and availability of both sides as well as support from the international community, an agreement may be reached that respects the legitimate aspirations of the two peoples, thus decisively contributing to the peace and stability of the region.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tPope Francis and President Peres also spent time discussing the \u201cconflict that plagues Syria\u201d and hoped for a political solution that \u201cprivileges the logic of reconciliation and dialogue,\u201d the Vatican communiqu\u00e9 said.<\/p>\n

\tThe two heads of State also discussed relations between Israel and the Holy See, as well as relations between state authorities and local Catholic communities.<\/p>\n

\tThe Vatican stated that during their talks they appreciated \u201csignificant progress made by the Bilateral Working Commission, which is preparing an agreement regarding issues of common interest\u201d and that a rapid conclusion is expected.<\/p>\n

\tThe Bilateral Working Commission includes fiscal negotiations, which were resumed in 2004.<\/p>\n

\tAgreements still need to be reached on taxation and what degree of exemption Catholic churches and institutions have in Israel.<\/p>\n

\tOther issues involve agreeing on which ecclesiastical properties and what level of immunity of expropriation they should enjoy.<\/p>\n

\tAfter his meeting with Pope Francis, the Israeli president met with the Vatican\u2019s Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, and with the Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Dominique Mamberti.<\/p>\n

\tPresident Peres will be travelling on May 1 to Assisi, Italy, the hometown of the Pope\u2019s patron saint, Francis of Assisi.<\/p>\n

\tThere he will be awarded with an \u201cHonorary Citizenship for Peace\u201d and with a key to the city.<\/p>\n
