Washington D.C., Jun 4, 2013 \/ 05:01 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- In a talk at the nation's capital, a U.S. scholar argued that so-called private entities \u2013 such as the family, religion and interpersonal interactions \u2013 involve and are in fact the core of public society.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cReligion itself is a rational insight into what it means to be human: what it means to to live in a particular place, to speak a particular language, to have particular family members, to be here and now,\u201d said Dr. Susan Hanssen, an associate professor of history at the University of Dallas.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIf religion is the primary rational insight into our human condition, then it has to be also central to our public discourse, these are all public relations,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n

\tHanssen spoke June 3 at the Catholic Information Center in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

\tDuring her remarks, she argued that the private bonds of religion and family life are the root of public relations, and that historically, America has had \u201claws that have this sort of reverence\u201d for the family and the Church.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cA father\u2019s relationship to his children is a public relation that has to be respected in law,\u201d Hanssen said, \u201cthe marriage bond is a public relation that is of concern to everyone because it is the core of society,\u201d and these relations have been protected in public society.<\/p>\n

\tHanssen distinguished between the nation and the state, arguing that while the state is a purely political entity, \u201cthe nation has to recognize both the natural existence of the family and the church,\u201d incorporating both into the well-being of society.<\/p>\n

\tShe explained that historically, the state \u201cwas the only corporate sovereign that had any right to exist,\u201d whereas within a nation, \u201cthere is, beyond the polis, church and family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHowever, Hanssen noted, the United States and other countries have moved from an understanding of a society that incorporates corporate institutions such as the family and religion towards individualism.<\/p>\n

\tInstead of the nation assisting the task \u201cof creating and sustaining a family\u201d and other corporate entities, instead there the state \u201ctolerates\u201d certain groups and collections of persons, Hanssen said.<\/p>\n

\tShe explained, though, that this trend does not ring the death knell for the Church or for families, saying that these social institutions \u201ccan\u2019t die unless no one sustains them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHanssen noted that despite popular conception, institutions of popular culture and political power don\u2019t \u201chave actual, human gravitational pull\u201d because of their focus upon the individual.<\/p>\n

\tInterpersonal, social institutions can be maintained and revived, she stated, because people \u201cdo still value genuine interpersonal relationships.\u201d Hanssen added that the \u201cthe more vibrant\u201d these forces are, \u201cthe more it becomes the center of gravity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tShe encouraged young persons to focus upon creating \u201ctruly personal communities\u201d and supporting these corporate institutions, saying that the the maintenance of the family is \u201conly thing that will work\u201d in holding together the nation.<\/p>\n

\tShe also warned against those who wish to preserve the nation from becoming \u201cdesiccated, uprooted, solo, modern, individual yuppies fighting a policy battle to the death of Church, family, and love of patria,\u201d saying that instead \u201cit\u2019s much more important to put effort into creating sustaining those groups.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cLaw follows life,\u201d Hanssen said, saying that the structure of the country follows its lived practices and beliefs, and encouraged young people \u201cto put more of their effort in the myriad of decisions and judgments and life adjustments necessary to sustain churches and families and a nation.\u201d<\/p>\n
