Washington D.C., Jun 20, 2012 \/ 03:18 pm (CNA<\/a>).- The Catholic Association has released a 14-point \u201caction plan\u201d for those who want to participate in the \u201cFortnight for Freedom\u201d religious liberty advocacy event from June 21-July 4.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIt is so critical that Catholics stand together in defense of religious freedom and to preserve Catholic and other religious institutions\u2019 and employers\u2019 rights and ability to serve the common good,\u201d association senior policy advisor Maureen Ferguson said June 19.<\/p>\n

\tShe said the mandate forces faith-based entities to comply with a rule that \u201cso deeply violates our faith and conscience\u201d or pay \u201ccrippling\u201d fines.<\/p>\n

\tAshley McGuire, a senior fellow with The Catholic Association, said the activities are non-partisan.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThis is not a Democrat or Republican issue, this is a freedom and First Amendment issue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\tA Department of Health and Human Services mandate requires employers, including many Catholic institutions, to provide employees with no co-pay insurance coverage for sterilization and contraception. The mandate\u2019s narrow religious exemption has drawn fire from Catholics and others who say providing the coverage violates their religious and moral beliefs.<\/p>\n

\tCatholic and faith leaders others say a purported compromise from the Obama administration does not adequately address their concerns.<\/p>\n

\tMany Catholic dioceses are organizing \u201cFortnight for Freedom\u201d events to rally support for religious liberty.<\/p>\n

\tThe Catholic Association, a new group which says it aims to be \u201ca faithful Catholic voice in the public square,\u201d has also published its own suggestions.<\/p>\n

\tThey are urging concerned citizens to call members of Congress to ask him or her to support religious freedom efforts and to oppose the HHS mandate.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cTell the staff person you speak with that you would like a response from your representative and make sure they take down your\u00a0address,\u201d the association suggests.<\/p>\n

\tThe association also echoed the Catholic bishops\u2019 call for prayer and fasting.<\/p>\n

\tIt said Catholics should pray the Fortnight for Freedom\u2019s \u201cPrayer for Religious Liberty\u201d or say a decade of the Rosary for religious freedom.<\/p>\n

\tThe Catholic Association noted that institutions that violate the mandate as currently written face a fine of $100 per employee per day, which it described as a \u201cfine on faith.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe group suggested that Catholics respond by donating $14 to their favorite Catholic institution.<\/p>\n

\tChurches will ring their bells in a coordinated act at 12 p.m. Eastern time July 4. The Catholic Association said that Catholics and others should send out a Facebook post or a tweet with the phrase \u201cI Stand for Religious Freedom\u201d at the same time.<\/p>\n

\tParticipants can share with others the U.S. bishops\u2019 document \u201cOur First, Most Cherished Liberty.\u201d They can also sign petitions like the Beckett Fund\u2019s \u201cI Still Believe\u201d petition, the \u201cWomen Speak for Themselves\u201d petition and the \u201cConscience Clause\u201d petition.<\/p>\n

\tThe association also suggests participants invite14 friends to see the movie \u201cFor Greater Glory.\u201d<\/p>\n
