Vatican City, Jun 24, 2012 \/ 12:48 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Pope Benedict XVI says the Church's celebration of the birth of John the Baptist should be a reminder that for God, all things are possible.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cFrom his mother\u2019s womb, in fact, John is the forerunner of Jesus: his miraculous conception is announced from the Angel to Mary as a sign that 'nothing is impossible to God,'\u201d he said to pilgrims in St. Peters Square during his midday Angelus address June 24.<\/p>\n

\tThe Pope was marking today\u2019s Solemn Feast of The Nativity of St. John the Baptist. He noted that apart from Our Lady, St. John is the only saint to have their birthday celebrated as a liturgical feast \u201cbecause it is closely connected to the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHe explained that St. John is emphasized by all four Gospel writers as the prophet who concluded the Old Testament by preparing the way for the Christ and the New Covenant.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cTruly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he,\u201d said Jesus in the Gospel of St. Matthew.<\/p>\n

\tSt. John\u2019s father, Zechariah, was \u201ca priest of the cult of the Old Testament,\u201d and yet \u201che did not immediately believe the announcement of an unexpected fatherhood,\u201d said the Pope.<\/p>\n

\tAnd so Zechariah was silenced until the child\u2019s circumcision when \u201canimated by the Holy Spirit\u201d he proclaimed his son\u2019s mission;<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAnd you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAll this was manifested 30 years later,\u201d said the Pope, when St. John started to baptize in the River Jordan \u201ccalling the people to prepare, through the act of repentance, the imminent coming of the Messiah.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tSt. John then fulfilled his mission by both baptizing the Messiah in the River Jordan and, explained Pope Benedict, in being \u201casked to precede Jesus even in violent death.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThus in being beheaded by King Herod, St. John \u201cbore full witness to the Lamb of God, whom he had first recognized and announced publically.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cDear friends, the Virgin Mary helped her elderly cousin Elizabeth to carry to term the pregnancy of John,\u201d the Pope concluded.<\/p>\n
