CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Pope Francis\u2019 papacy has been marked by a distinct emphasis on the poor and a unique ability to convey God\u2019s tenderness, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia said Oct. 1 at the seminary of his archdiocese.<\/p>\n\t\u201cAnyone hoping for \u2013 or worried about \u2013 a break by Pope Francis from Catholic teaching on matters of substance is going to be mistaken,\u201d the archbishop said at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cAt the same time, the tone of this pontificate will certainly be distinct from anything in the past century.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tHis address was part of the Philadelphia archdiocese's Year of Faith lecture series.<\/p>\n
\tArchbishop Chaput particularly noted how the Pope has attracted the attention of so many people.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cThe reason the world has paused for Pope Francis \u2013 if only for a little while \u2013 is that so many people sense in him something more than himself; not just God\u2019s truth and God\u2019s justice, but God\u2019s <\/em>tenderness.\u201d<\/p>\n\tHe said that Pope Francis is shaped by \u201cthe global south\u201d and by \u201cthe poor who inhabit it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cGod will guide his Church. And God will fill this holy man who is our Pope with the wisdom to lead us well.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tArchbishop Chaput examined the goals of the Year of Faith, which lasts from Oct. 11, 2012 to Nov. 24, 2013. He explained that the observance is intended to help encourage Christians to profess their faith \u201cmore fully and with conviction,\u201d to deepen their encounter with Jesus Christ in the liturgy and the Eucharist, and to witness to the faith through the example of their lives.<\/p>\n
\tHe warned against treating Christianity as only habit and appearance, saying, \u201cthe words and habits of religion are easy. We can sometimes use them to fool ourselves. We need to drill down below the counterfeit Christianity so many of us prefer into the substance of who we are and what we really treasure.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tCatholics, he said, \u201cneed to let God transform us from the inside out,\u201d adding that this conversion requires \u201chumility, patience and love.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cIt requires letting go of the desire to vindicate ourselves at the expense of others. So much of modern life, even in the Church, is laced with a spirit of anger. And anger is an addiction as intense and as toxic as crack,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n
\tThe archbishop admonished against identifying the \u201cnew evangelization\u201d with techniques, technologies or programs.<\/p>\n
\tRather, its main instrument is \u201cyou and me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cThere\u2019s no way around those words: Repent and believe in the gospel. The world will change only when\u00a0you\u00a0change, when we change, because hearts are won by pe\u00a0rsonal witness. And we can\u2019t share what we don\u2019t have.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tRepentance, he said, \u201cmakes us new\u201d by \u201chealing the evil we\u2019ve done.\u201d Belief in the gospel gives Christians hope that despite their failures and sins, \u201cthe greatness of God\u2019s love can reach down and redeem even us.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tThe archbishop also discussed what Benedict XVI called the modern world\u2019s \u201cprofound crisis of faith\u201d and the modern world\u2019s inability to find happiness.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cHuman beings are more than a bundle of appetites. Our longings go beyond what we can see and touch and taste. We were made for God.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n
\tMaterialist answers to questions about the soul \u201ccan never be more than a narcotic,\u201d he reflected.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cSo much of the suffering in modern American life \u2013 we see it every day \u2013 can be traced to our misdirected desires, and the distractions we use to feed them. We look for joy and purpose in things that can never give us either.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tHe said Catholics need to prove their beliefs through \u201cthe zeal and joy of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tCatholics need to \u201cforgive each other, protect the weak, serve the needy, raise the young in virtue, speak with courage, and work for the truth without ceasing \u2013 always in a spirit of love.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tArchbishop Chaput said God\u2019s love is \u201cthe heart of the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tHe prayed that God \u201cturn our hearts to him, and make us a 'fire upon the earth' \u2013 a fire that lifts up his creation in love.\u201d<\/p>\n
