Vatican City, Oct 3, 2013 \/ 01:52 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Bl. Pope John XXIII\u2019s encyclical on peace should remind everyone of the need to \u201cbuild peace on the example of Jesus Christ,\u201d Pope Francis said Oct. 3.<\/p>\n

\tThe failure to work for justice means \u201cthere can be no real peace and harmony,\u201d the Pope said, according to Vatican Radio.<\/p>\n

\tEveryone should promote and practice \u201cjustice with truth and love\u201d while contributing to \u201cintegral human development,\u201d he added. This means an end to \u201cegotism, individualism, and group interests at every level.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe Pope reflected on the relevance of the 1963 encyclical \u201cPacem in Terris\u201d \u2013 or \u201cPeace on Earth \u2013 written by Bl. John XXIII, who will be canonized next spring.<\/p>\n

\tAlthough the encyclical was written near the height of Cold War tensions between the United States and Russia, it remains \u201cextremely contemporary,\u201d Pope Francis said.<\/p>\n

\tDespite \u201cthe fall of walls and barriers, the world continues to need peace,\u201d he told participants in a three-day Vatican conference marking the encyclical\u2019s 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n

\tThe conference drew participants from the U.N., the Council of Europe, the African Union, the Organization of American States, and Catholic universities and institutions, Vatican Radio reports.<\/p>\n

\tPope Francis said the encyclical reminds Christians that peacemaking is based in mankind\u2019s \u201cdivine origin.\u201d This common origin means every human being shares a common dignity that they must \u201cpromote, respect and safeguard always.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHe urged more efforts to provide access to food, water, shelter, health care and education. He also emphasized the need for everyone to have the possibility \u201cto form and support a family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cOn this depends an enduring peace for everyone,\u201d Pope Francis said.<\/p>\n

\tHe also noted that during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, Pope John XXIII called for peace, attempting to orient the international debate towards the virtues of \u201cdialogue, listening, patience, respect of the other, sincerity and even an openness to reconsidering one\u2019s own opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tPope Francis encouraged his audience to reflect on \u201cPacem in Terris\u201d as they respond to challenges to peace today, including those in the realms of education, lack of access to resources, ethical problems in biological research, arms races, and the mass media\u2019s \u201cimpact on consciences.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe current economic crisis is \u201cinhuman\u201d and \u201ca grave symptom of the disrespect for man and for (the) truth with which governments and citizens make decisions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\tThe Holy Father briefly mentioned current events, voicing his sorrow for the hundreds of African refugees dead or missing after the recent sinking of a refugee-laden boat off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIt is a shame!\u201d he said. \u201cLet us pray together to God for those who have lost their lives: men, women, children, for the families and for all the refugees.\u201d<\/p>\n
