Washington D.C., Oct 3, 2013 \/ 07:21 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- U.S. President Barack Obama said that he admires Pope Francis for his spiritual leadership, and in particular for his love, humility and empathy for the poor.<\/p>\n

\tAsked by CNBC on Oct. 2 what he thinks about Pope Francis\u2019 comments in recent interviews, Obama said that he has been \u201chugely impressed with the Pope\u2019s pronouncements,\u201d although \u201cnot because of any particular issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tRather, he said the witness of the Pope\u2019s life has drawn his admiration.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cFirst of all, he seems somebody who lives out the teachings of Christ. Incredible humility, an incredible sense of empathy to the least of these, to the poor,\u201d Obama said, lauding the Holy Father as \u201csomeone who is first and foremost thinking about how to embrace people as opposed to push them away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThat spirit, that sense of love and unity, seems to manifest itself not just in what he says, but in what he does,\u201d the president continued.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cFor any religious leader, that's a quality I admire, and I would argue, for any leader period, that's a quality I admire.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tObama has also praised Pope Francis\u2019 predecessor, Benedict XVI.<\/p>\n

\tUpon the announcement of Benedict\u2019s resignation in February 2013, the president issued a statement of \u201cappreciation and prayers,\u201d saying that he had \u201cappreciated our work together over these last four years\u201d and acknowledging that the Catholic Church \u201cplays a critical role in the United States and the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
