Castel Gandolfo, Italy, Jul 15, 2012 \/ 11:41 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday praised the intellectual legacy of the 13th century Franciscan St. Bonaventure who popularized St. Paul\u2019s belief in the \u201ccentrality of Christ\u201d in human history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAll of history is centered on Christ, who guarantees novelty and renewal in every age,\u201d the Pope said in his Sunday Angelus address July 15.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIn Jesus, God has spoken and given everything, but because he is an inexhaustible treasure, the Holy Spirit never ceases to reveal and actualize his mystery. Therefore, the work of Christ and the Church never regresses, but always progresses.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tPope Benedict explained to enthusiastic pilgrims gathered in the courtyard of his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo that July 15 is the memory of St. Bonaventure of Bagnoregio in the Church\u2019s liturgical calendar. He said the Doctor of the Church was not only the successor of St. Francis of Assisi as head of the Franciscan order, he was also St. Francis\u2019 first biographer.<\/p>\n

\tLater in life, said the Pope, St. Bonaventure had recalled that the reason he loved St. Francis so much was that his life was \u201csimilar to the origin and growth of the Church\u201d when Christ had sent out his twelve Apostles \u201ctwo by two\u201d instructing them \u201cto take nothing for the journey but a walking stick \u2013 no food, no sack, no money in their belts.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\tThis happened to be the Gospel reading for today, a fact not lost on Pope Benedict.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe whole life of St. Bonaventure as well as his theology has Jesus Christ as their core inspiration,\u201d said the Pope.<\/p>\n

\tThis theme of the \u201ccentrality of Christ\u201d is also found in today\u2019s second reading at Mass in St. Paul\u2019s \u201cfamous hymn\u201d to the Church in Ephesus. In the reading, the Apostle Paul outlines how all human history is ultimately \u201cin him\u201d with \u201chim,\u201d meaning Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

\tPope Benedict further examined the hymn.<\/p>\n

\t\u00a0\u201c\u2018In him\u2019 the Father chose us before the foundation of the world \u2018in him\u2019 we have redemption through his blood, \u2018in him\u2019 we have become heirs predestined to be \u2018the praise of his glory\u2019; \u2018in Him\u2019 those who believe in the Gospel receive the seal of the Holy Spirit,\u201d said the Pope.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\tIt is also this hymn that \u201ccontains the Pauline view of history that St. Bonaventure has helped to spread in the Church,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\tPope Benedict concluded by invoking the help of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whose feast Is celebrated tomorrow. He asked that everybody may follow the example of St. Francis and St. Bonaventure and \u201crespond generously to God\u2019s call to proclaim his Gospel of salvation with our words and above all with our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
