Vatican City, Jul 16, 2012 \/ 05:28 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Pope Benedict XVI will use his annual message for the 46th World Day of Peace this Jan. 1 to examine the \u201cworrying crisis of democracy,\u201d the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace said July 16.<\/p>\n

\tThe pontiff will examine \u201cfundamental rights\u201d including freedom of conscience, expression and religion. He will also reflect upon the measures taken to contain contemporary financial and economic crises and \u201cthe crisis of the institutions and politics.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe pontifical council said that this institutional crisis is in many cases a \u201ccrisis of democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe Pope has chosen the day\u2019s theme as \u201cBlessed are the peacemakers.\u201d His message will encourage everyone to \u201ctake responsibility\u201d for building peace, and will examine \u201cthe fullness and diversity of the concept of peace,\u201d including \u201cinner peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe message will mark the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and Pope John XXIII\u2019s 1963 encyclical \u201cPacem in Terris.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThat encyclical looked at how to build an earthly city that will serve every person, a city that is directed to the common good based on justice and peace.<\/p>\n
