Vatican City, Apr 5, 2014 \/ 01:13 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Pope Francis met with a group of Italian mayors and other political leaders Saturday morning, encouraging them to live among the people and to act on behalf of everyone\u2019s wellbeing.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe mayor, in the midst of people. One doesn\u2019t understand a mayor who would not be there, because he is a mediator, a mediator in the midst of the needs of the people,\u201d Pope Francis said to the president and 120 members of the National Association of Italian Municipalities on April 5.<\/p>\n

\tHe said it is \u201cdangerous\u201d when a mayor is not a mediator but rather an \u201cintermediary\u201d who acts as a \u201cbroker\u201d and \u201ctakes advantage\u201d of people\u2019s needs. He praised the leader who is a mediator and \u201cpays with his life for the unity of his people, for the wellbeing of his people, in order to bring forward diverse solutions to the needs of his people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe Holy Father noted that this is not an easy task.<\/p>\n

\tOften \u201cthe poor mayor ends up dejected by so many things\u201d when \u201cat the end of a day he comes home with so many things that have not been resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tYet, said the Pope, this work is their \u201cspirituality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tAfter dedicating so much effort at work, \u201ca mayor, this man, or this woman, ends up tired, with the desire to rest a little, but with a heart full of love because he or she has been a mediator.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAnd I congratulate you in this,\u201d encouraged the pontiff, \u201cthat you are mediators. In the midst of the people, to make unity, to make peace, to resolve problems and to solve the needs of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tPope Francis went on to suggest that the politicians \u201cthink of Jesus\u201d who found himself in a crowd \u201calmost to the point\u2013says the gospel\u2013where he couldn\u2019t breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe mayor must be like this,\u201d stressed the Pope, \u201cwith his people, with that man, with that woman, because this means that the people, as with Jesus, look for him because he knows to respond.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cI wish you this,\u201d continued the Holy Father, \u201ctiredness, in the midst of your people, and that the people look for you because they know you always respond well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe National Association of Italian Municipalities was established in 1901. According to the group\u2019s website, its main goals involve responsibility for the communities administered, unity and solidarity of communities and institutions, and autonomy from governments and political parties.<\/p>\n

\tIt represents the municipalities\u2019 interests and lobbies parliament, the government, regions, Italy\u2019s public administration and E.U. bodies on their behalf.<\/p>\n
